Day 6 w/ Adrian Phoenix @ 9 DAYS OF DARKNESS EVENT

9 Days of Darkness with
Adrian Phoenix
today from 12-6pm PST.

I was fortunate to have my interview with Adrian Phoenix via telephone and able to chat for quite some time. I’d like to thank her for being so patient, since I did the interview over a month ago and am just now posting it. I wanted to make sure I had a special venue to showcase her as the incredible author she is and talk about her wonderful books.

Most importantly, let me say that Adrian is the sweetest person, ever! She is truly a kind soul. She was a delight to speak with and I’m glad to have had the chance to ask her these questions:

1. Where do you live? Kids? Pets?
Springfield, OR . She is single, has 2 adult sons and lives with her three cats. My cats' names are: Amega, Diobla’ and Ember
2. What started you writing?
I always wanted to write and I wrote a lot of stories growing up. I always thought there was an old arcane process of writing a novel, so I never really tried it.
I took a workshop on novel structure and had the “ah ha!” moment, it was no different than writing the short stories. So I went home and wrote A RUSH OF WINGS.
3. RUSH OF WINGS was your first attempt at writing a novel?
Yes, that was the first book I wrote. I feel very fortunate, I submitted the book at the right time.
4. Do you have any must haves when you write?
I write on the computer, but when I get stuck on something I turn to a yellow legal pad and write a stream of consciousness; helping me figure out where I made a wrong turn.
But I do need my cup of coffee and my music. I listen to Nine inch Nails, Lincoln Park or some movie soundtracks. The music matches the intensity of Dante’s character.
5. What is your favorite book in the series?
I like them all, but A RUSH OF WINGS was my first and is very special to me.
6. Who’s your favorite character?
Dante, of course. He is the center and everything revolves around him.
7. When does the next book in the series release? What is the title? Who does is focus on?
ETCHED IN BONE releases in Dec 2010, Dante is always the focus, but here’s a blurb about the book:
I. Ain't. Running. And I sure as hell ain't hiding.
But that vow brings consequences that Dante Baptiste--True Blood vampire, Fallen Maker, rock musician--never imagined even as it brings him face to face with those hunting him and his lover, former FBI agent, Heather Wallace; the covert Shadow Branch, the vampire Cercle de Druide, and rogue assassins. And now that the Fallen have finally discovered their long-awaited Maker, they have no intention of letting him walk away.

As Dante Fights to claim his life as his own, while dealing with the awakened and shattered memories of his brutal past, an unexpected enemy arises from within Heather's family; an enemy who nearly destroys Dante by stealing the one person who keeps him balanced--Heather.

All worlds--mortal, nightkind, and Fallen--hang in the balance as Dante searches for Heather. And his success or failure will determine whether he becomes the Never-Ending Road or the Great Destroyer.

8. I like to find new and upcoming authors and make recommendations to the followers, Do you have anyone you think we should know about?
I would recommend author D.B. Reynolds and her Vampires in America series. She is a talented writer and was even nominated and a finalist for best new PN author in 2009.
9. Can you tell me about your new book, BLACK DUST MAMBO?
It releases on June 29th and is the first book in a new series about Voodoo(black magic) and Hoodoo (folk magic) in the Bayou. It has murder, mystery and a wet boxer contest (this is right up DemonLover’s alley, wet men boxing!).
10. What is the first book you fell in love with?
The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton
11. Who is your favorite author? series?
Jeaniene Frost and the Night Huntress series
12. Do you have any exciting plans coming up?
Actually, when writing Book 3 BENEATH THE SKIN, I had to map out a cross country trip for Dante and Heather to flee to New Orleans. I plan to make that same cross country trip with a friend this summer, it should be very exciting.

You've built such a detailed world with a whole back story that is amazing. Everyone should check out these books! And I can hardly wait for Black Dust Mambo ... a wet boxer contest? Oh my.

Don't include me in the giveaway, I already have all the books on the shelf where I keep the ones I read over and over again! December can't come soon enough for me, and I ain't talking about Santa Claus!

Hi Adrian! You are a new author I'm about to discover thanks to the Book Bloggers Anonymous book club, where we'll read and discuss your novel A Rush of Wings in June. I have read amazing reviews about your series, so I can't wait to start! :-) (oh and I can't wait to finally get all the allusions and remarks I've seen about Dante!! :-p)

I think it is fantastic that you use music to help you become that character you are writing about.

Etched in Bone sounds exciting, and the cover of Black Dust Mambo looks great!! Congratulations!

And thank you for this generous giveaway!!

Thanks so much to Kelly of DemonLover's for having me here and for the fun interview. It was a pleasure talking to you!

Adrian Phoenix said...

Hi DB! Hey, how awesome that you're first! Thanks so much for your comments and support. I'm so looking forward to your next book, RAJMUND.

Etched in Bone's release date has been pushed back to January 25, 2011, due to a scheduling crunch at Pocket. They had about 6 book (including mine) all coming out about the same time and had to shuffle things around. So instead of December 29, it will be January 25.

Adrian Phoenix said...

Karen E,

Thanks so much for being here! I appreciate your support and I'm honored to be one of your favorite authors!

I think you'll really enjoy Black Dust Mambo too!

Hey Adrian, Excellent interview! You know I love your books - Rush of Wings really opened my eyes up to a whole genre of books I never even considered reading before. Because of that and my voracious appetite for more I’ve uncovered all kinds of new friends and groups that I cant believe I've lived without all this time - I belong somewhere! It’s great finding people like yourself. Thank you!

Hey Carol! Great to see you here! I'm glad you enjoyed the interview. Drop by when you can, no worries - I totally understand about being busy!

I'm really looking forward to the road trip.

Adrian Phoenix said...

Hi Miranda! Thanks for being here!

Music really inspired Dante, Nine Inch Nails, in particular. The emotions behind the music, the lyrics, created images in my mind, very dark images.

I started wondering; what if the songs were absolute truth - the raw pain, betrayal, fury, and devastation behind them. Who would the person be singing them and what would've been the events that shaped him?

Dante was always nightkind. Not once did I think of him as human. He took a life of his own, at that point.

Adrian Phoenix said...

Thanks so much, Jeanette! I'm thrilled to be added to your must read list.

I really appreciate your support!

Adrian Phoenix said...

Hi Raelena,

Welcome! Thanks for joining us! I don't have a set number for the series. I'd like it to continue for as long as I have a story to tell. But once I think it's reached it's natural end, then I'll finish it.

Of course, in the long run, that's up the publisher.

Adrian Phoenix said...

Hi Elaine!

Good to see you again! Thanks for being here.

2 sentences. Hmm. (I'll steal a little for the EW review): 1.Hard-charging action, steamy sex scenes and a surprising government conspiracy.

2. Dark destiny, fallen angels, restless nightkind, twisted mortals; the fate of three worlds rests in Dante Baptiste's hands, and Heather can guide him past the wasp-crawling madness of his past . . .

Sheesh. This is hard! LOL!

Adrian Phoenix said...

Rachel and Judi, hi!!!

Thanks so much for joining me! Thanks for the love and for spreading the word!

Hey guys, sorry I'm a bit late today, but I took the kids out to play in the beautiful 80 degree weather Vegas is enjoying.

Adrian, I just started A Rush of Wings last night, and the hubby had to turn the lights off on me to get me to go to bed! lol

All the loyal followers:
thank you for popping by today, I think that the questions being asked are great, and very interesting.

Adrian Phoenix said...

Hi Maria, so glad you joined us! I've got to admit, knowing the books have caused you some sleepless nights feels damned good. LOL! Thanks for that!!

I've got a couple of methods for keeping track of the multiple POVs. The first one is a simple list of each POV in the order it appears. I can glance at it and see that it's time to get back to Caterina or Emmett or ADIC Rutgers, etc.

The other method is by time zone and time of day/night. I have characters in various time zones in the States and some in Europe. Time of day is important since some of the characters are nightkind and will be Sleeping during their respective days.

So if it's night in Rome, I need to check the time in New Orleans to see if she can contact Giovanni or not or Caterina in D.C.

The time zone juggling is more complicated than the multiple POVs. LOL!

Thanks for the question!

Adrian Phoenix said...

Rachel,

I'm happy to pass your love along to the guys! They're Snoozing right, so they're behaving. otherwise . . . ;)

Adrian Phoenix said...

Hey, Highland Hussy (I soooo love that handle!) 80 degree weather! Wow! Nice! I don't blame you!

Since I'm in Oregon, it's raining. Liquid sunshine we call it. LOL.

Thanks so much for having me here! It's truly a pleasure!

I'm so glad you're enjoying Rush! (Enough so that your hubby had to turn off the light. LOL!)
