FINAL DAY in the 9 DAYS OF DARKNESS EVENT!

DAY 9 in the 9 DAYS OF DARKNESS EVENT

The 9 Days of Darkness event is coming to a close…
But don’t despair; we’ve saved a good one for the end!

Jenna Maclaine, Author of BOUND BY SIN
and finalist for the
2010 RomCon Reader's Crown awards will be here
9am-3pm PST TODAY!
Thanks to fate or coincidence, I was sent BOUND BY SIN to judge for the upcoming RomCon convention in July. Finding out it was the 3rd book in the series; I immediately ordered the first two. Boy was I glad that I did.

Let’s find out a little more about this wonderful author…
Interview with Jenna Maclaine

1. Where do you currently live? I live in North Georgia.
2. Are you Married? kids? No husband or kids, but I have two beautiful nieces whom I adore.
3. What/who started you in writing? I’ve always written stories and poems. When I was a kid I used to make little books out of folded pieces of paper and write stories about my animals. I started writing the first Cin Craven book, Wages of Sin, back in 2004 after Buffy and Angel had gone off the air and I'd run out of vampire books to read.
4. Do you want to thank one person in particular for giving that extra push? My parents have always been enormously supportive of my writing. I couldn’t ask for a better support system than them. And my grandmother always believed in me. I promised her before she passed away that I would finish the book I was writing at the time. I didn’t that one, but I did write Wages, so I think she’d be proud of me.
5. How many books did you attempt before you were published? I have one unfinished historical romance in the bottom of my desk drawer, but Wages of Sin was the first book I completed.
6. Do you have any MUST haves to write? Food, drink or time? Not really. Well, chocolate. I must have chocolate to do anything! As far as time goes, though, I prefer to write at night because everything is quiet and there’s not a whole lot that’s going to interrupt your creative process at 2AM. There are no errands you should be running or phone calls you should be making. Of course, the flip side of that is that it turns you into a vampire!
7. Which novel is your favorite in the Cin Craven series? I think Bound by Sin is my favorite novel in the series, “Sin Slayer” in the Huntress anthology is my favorite Cin short story and “The Warrior” in The Mammoth Book of Irish Romance is my favorite short story that doesn’t feature Cin.
8. Who is your favorite character? I think Cin has to be my favorite character overall, just because I know her so well. Of the secondary characters in the series, I grew very attached to Fiona in Wages of Sin and to Claire and Evangeline in Bound by Sin.
9. How many books are slated to be in the Cin Craven series? I have ideas for five or six more books, so eight or nine total for the series.
10. For the next book, what is the name and when is the release date? The working title of book four is Bar Sinister. I don’t have a release date for it yet.
11. What made you write a series about witches & vampires? As I said, I was a big fan of Buffy and Angel and paranormal romance/urban fantasy books in general, so when I decided to write my own book it seemed natural to go with a supernatural theme. And I love history so I liked the idea of writing vampires because I could explore so many different time periods with them.
12. Do you have plans for another new book/series? Once I’m done with Cin’s story there are several of my secondary characters I’d be interested in spinning off into their own series. It just depends on who speaks to me the loudest when the time comes.
13. Do you have any pets? . Oh yes! I live on a family farm. We have sheep, llamas, alpacas, and a multitude of dogs and cats, including my four Jack Russell Terriers
14. What is the 1st book you remember reading and falling in love with? Oh, there were so many! One of my favorites had to be The Golden Treasury of Poetry. I could spend hours- days!- with that book.
15. Who are your favorite authors? Favorite series? I have a lot of favorites, but to name a few: Laurell Hamilton, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Kim Harrison, Charlaine Harris, MaryJanice Davidson, JR Ward, Kresley Cole, Katie Macalister, Julia Quinn, Jude Devereaux, Judith McNaught, Virginia Henley, Catherine Coulter, Diana Gabaldon, Eloisa James, Julia London. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood, Davidson’s Undead, Gabaldon’s Outlander, and Kenyon’s Dark-Hunter series are some of my favorites. Probably the most read and well-worn of my paperbacks are The Duchess by Jude Devereaux, Something Wonderful by Judith McNaught, Seize the Night by Sherrilyn Kenyon, the first 4 books of the Outlander series and the first 8 books of Hamilton’s Anita Blake series.
16. What is your favorite quote?
“When you follow your bliss doors will open where you would not have thought there would be doors; and where there wouldn't be a door for anyone else.” ~Joseph Campbell

Review of Bound By Sin

What a wonderful heroine is our Cin Craven; Witch, vampire, member of the Righteous and wife. She has that knack for finding trouble, or maybe it’s that trouble just tends to find her in her new chosen profession. As a member of the Righteous, she and 3 others are charged with protecting the innocent, enforcing laws and wielding swift justice when necessary.

Cin finds herself being drawn somewhere, by someone.... back to her home. Someone has performed a summoning spell and a powerful one, but why? Upon arrival to the family estate, she finds that her niece has been kidnapped under strange circumstances. Her dear cousin pleads with her for her help, to return her daughter back home where she belongs.

Cin casts a spell to find her niece and confirms that she has been taken south, to a plantation by an evil acquaintance with ulterior motives. She has no choice by to help her kin, They will leave immediately to find her. Michael, Cin’s husband, is faced with Cin’s ever growing dark powers and is wary for her to us them, afraid of the consequences. But their love and bond is too strong to be broken, they will undertake this journey together. And bring back her family, no matter the obstacles.

This book is fantastic and gives you a little bit of everything; witches, voodoo, ghosts and even an imprisoned god. Though set in the past, there is nothing old or dated about this story. Cin Craven and her adventures are fresh, exciting and sometimes sinfully sexy. Michael and Cin’s chemistry seems to burn up the pages, very hot indeed!

Please check out Jenna’s books, you won’t be disappointed.

Great interview, Jenna. And I loved the Joseph Campbell quote!

Jenna Maclaine said...

M- Well, my vampires don't sparkle. They burn up in the sun like good vampires should! They can move about in the daytime, though, and they can handle indirect sunlight. They are ruled by various local regents and kings, but they all answer to one High King. As the review mentioned, The Righteous (Cin, her husband Michael, and their two friends, Devlin and Justine) are basically the police force of the vampire nation. The Celtic goddess Morrigan is the creator of my vampires and she and the High King have quite a love/hate relationship that I had the opportunity to tell in the Mammoth Book of Irish Romance. This is one of my favorite short stories.

Elizabeth- I set my novels in historical periods because I like historicals romances. Also, because I thought it was a shame that we never get to hear a great many of the stories about all our present-day UF vampires, except in flashbacks. I thought it would be fun to start at the beginning of a vampire's "after life" and work my way up to the present day.

Rachel- Right now I wish I had vampire strength! I have several elderly sheep with arthritis and my lower back sure would appreciate some vamp strength when I have to help them get up or down. (I talk a lot about my farm on Facebook and my blog, btw, if anyone is interesed!) Super strength isn't quite as sexy a response as, say, Cin's magical powers but I think I'd find it more useful in my daily life. Hahaha.... Yes, right now I'm imagining what it would be like to combine PMS with Cin's ability to smite people! I think it would be slightly safer for everyone if I stick with super strength!

Amy- I don't have any plans right now for publishing the historical, but you never know what might happen. I didn't really have any plans to try to get Wages of Sin published when I first started writing it, either. I'd just run out of stuff I wanted to read. So keep writing, Amy!

Skyla- At the time I started writing Wages UF and the big surge of vampires in romance had just taking off and I'd read most of the first big authors to hit the scene. Buffy and Angel had just gone off the air and I didn't have any more vampire shows on TV. I was basically in vamp withdrawal so I decided to try writing my own. Cin and Michael came to me in one of those half-awake-half-asleep dream states and once I had them they took over and told the story from there. I sort of just went along for the ride!

Also if you could go anywhere in the world for a holiday where would you go and why?
