In honor of Ten Ways to Be Adored When Landing A Lord releasing tomorrow, I thought I'd post my review for Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake.
A big fat 5 star rating! 5 shining stars!!!
I think that I wasn't expecting to like this book as much as I did, but it is far and above my absolute favorite book this year. (even above Pride Mates which as you all know, is a huge favorite of mine!) I loved how Callie, one day tired of being nice, proper, boring Callie, just decided that was it! She had lived on the outskirts of the ballroom long enough. She may never be the belle of the ball, but she would not die an unkissed old spinster! She wrote out a list of things she wanted to do. For example, shoot a gun, or ride a horse astride, get a kiss...
That kiss is what leads to rake Gabriel St. John.
She'd had a crush on him since she was 18. And she finds herself at his front door in the middle of the night. And as she bargains for her kiss, Gabriel bargains for her time as a sponsor to help his half-sister enter society.
Gabriel is more than shocked to find Lady Calpurnia in his chambers in the middle of the night, but he is even more shocked at how much he enjoys kissing her.
while Callie is busy trying to discover life, and who she is, (she tries whiskey in a public tavern!), Gabriel is trying to keep tabs on her so that his sister's entrance into the ton isn't compromised. And through this all, through Callie's adventures of sneaking into a men's club to fence,gambling, kissing- Gabriel is there. And he is falling madly in love with her. Enough so that after he realizes that he just took Callie's virginity in a men's club (yes, you heard me-a gentlemen's club!), he proposes marriage. Well, of course Callie turns him down.
She doesn't want him to marry her because he feels he has to.
He convinces her to marry him that he truly does want to marry her, and they are fabulously happy for all of 1 day, before drama ensues. Another suitor, Oxford, has been pursuing Callie for the sake of a bet...a bet with Gabriel! Gabriel bet that Oxford wouldn't get Callie to marry him, but in the sense that Callie would never marry a jackass like Oxford. But when it all comes out into the open...wow, what emotion! I cried. I bawled like a baby over the heartbreak Callie felt, over the betrayal...and Gabriel was so wonderful. ::sigh::
There was a duel at the end of this book. I'll leave it at that for everyone else to find out what the duel was about, who fought it and who got shot.
I loved the ending of this book, I loved the beginning of this book. every single word in this book. If I could rate it above 5 stars, I would.
