Book Review: Betrayed by Claire Robyns

BetrayedBetrayed by Claire Robyns

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I received this book as an ARC from Netgalley.com

The blurb for Betrayed makes it sound awesome!! Add that to the dozen or so 5 star reviews, and I was so excited to read a great medieval Historical. I really loved the plot. The author is English and I think that gives this book a flavor of authenticity, and her writing is good, in fact I loved a few lines, that I will definitely put in this review.

However, this book struck a couple discordant notes for me.
Amber, our heroine and an English lady, is the niece of the cruel Jardin laird, and her father has recently died, so her uncle took her in…for nothing more than to have her break a curse he thinks her mother and father set upon him. For the first hundred pages or so, I really felt for Amber, I thought she’d been through a lot, and I cut her some slack. Well, she has a friend in the neighboring rival clan who lets it slip that there will be a raid that night on her clan…so her maid is beaten by her uncle until she tells him everything. Amber decides then and there that she and her maid must escape before her cruel unlce marries her off to one of his cronies. So she tries to run away, but is kidnapped by the laird of the Johnstone clan in retaliation of the raid. He fears her uncle has one of his men prisoner-Amber’s friend. His clan hates her at first since she's the enemy, and there are several parts with his leman that pissed me off, no matter how nice she is, I don't want to see my hero sexing up his mistress while he's thinking of the heroine. It happens several times. Then amber walks in on them, and never tells him. She wastes a lot of time being pissy and mad without telling him why. He had no clue she'd seen him. Amber also is such a rude spoiled brat to some people throughout the book that I wanted to smack her. She spends the whole book trying to run away from Krayne. No really. Even when it's apparent she has nowhere to go and no money. Really.

Well, Krayne and Amber immediately feel lusty towards one another, which I totally felt, it was great…BUT the laird, our hero, was more cruel than I’d normally find in an Historical. Not to mention, I believe he’s in his thirties (I think he was mentioned being 35), and Amber is…wait for it...17. I know that is an appropriate age for marriage for the times, but Amber is very childish and an incredibly selfish heroine. He complains she acts like a child. SHE IS A CHILD! It feels like the author is making her childish on purpose, but I have no idea what that purpose is! It makes her unlikeable.

I understood her desire to leave Krayne...at first...but once their relationship was established, it became idiotic to leave. I mean where would she go? She thought only of herself. Always.

"She usually barged forward, merrily doing things her way, with the view that is someone didn't like it, they could leave it."

That was a comment the heroine thought about herself(major epiphany time!), so I was all gung-ho for her to change, or be nicer, or at the very least explain a VERY BIG HUGE SECRET to her husband, But NOOOOO, she just keeps acting like a selfish child!

A huge thing that bothered me was that Amber is constantly saying her body is a weapon. She teases men, tries to seduce her guards, and is caught doing it twice. Krayne has her learn to wield a sword…sort of . She’s too small, and the broadsword too big. So he has one specially made for her and she half-asses her attempts to learn to use it. At the end, Amber is about to be gang raped and she, instead of using her body for a weapon, snags a sword she can barely lift, all because of a promise to Krayne-that she’d never use her body as a weapon again. Okay, yay for not breaking a promise, but hello? It’s your life at stake!

And what does he do? He thinks to himself “please seduce him, you can’t lift that sword.” He actually was okay with her seducing the man, after all that…the author validates the female using her body to get her way. Pissed the feminist in me right off…and to be honest, I’m not that big of a feminist, so that’s saying something!

I just never felt that the reason Amber did what she did during the HUGE SECRET part was justified. Even after Krayne figured it out-that's right, he figured it out...she did not confess! Not once. Even then, her reasoning was totally childish.

Other than that it was a good story, but (and this is all me personally, it might not bother anyone else) the points of views fluctuated between so many people without warning. It was mid-paragraph, then wait, who thought that? I thought this was Amber’s section, no wait it’s her uncle’s for like 3 paragraphs then back to Amber, or Krayne, or his mother, or some random guy who we heard from once. We’d have chapters from one character, then a few paragraphs from someone else, then back to the main character. I don’t mind the pov shifts if there are breaks in the paragraphing, or the storyline, but it’s just too random and all over the place for my taste. Again, not something that will bother most people, just one of my pet peeves.

So my final verdict is that it is a good historical read, but don't expect much from the heroine, she's a selfish and egotistical brat who thinks whatever she wants is justifiable by whatever means necessary. In fact, Amber made me drop this from a 4 star book for the plot, to a 2.5 star rating.

My favorite quotes (and this book had a lot of great quotes):

"She needed his body flush against hers, his touch caressing and stroking, she needed him inside her. The assurance that she belonged to her husband and only him."

"Kidnapping is a national past time to these Scots and they do it for the sheer pleasure of making each other miserable."

Heart's Sentinel (Terra's Guardians, #1)
Did you RSVP for this contest? If not, go to the review on this site and enter your email address to be eligible; while you're there...read the review.

Here's a few questions I had for PJ:

Where do you currently live?
Lost in suburbia close enough to visit Philly and NYC on a regular basis when I need a taste of urban fantasy. ;)

Are you Married? kids? pets?
I’m recently divorced and learning to be me again. No kids, but I have two loyal dogs and a super stealthy ninja kitty to keep me company.

What/who/ How did you get started writing?
My stories started as fits and figments of imagination captured in the margins of notebooks back in school. My first manuscript was typed in the word processing program of a Tandy 1000xl. Multiple fledgling stories migrated to Windows 3.x with MS Works and then on to Windows 95 and MS Word. (I know, I’m a PC, but I have much admiration for Mac)

Now, my writing is done in Liquid Story Binder with component based authoring, but the stories still start as bits of random thought and captured plot bunnies in a notebook.

Do you want to thank one person in particular for giving that extra push?
If you ever have the chance to spend time with my little sister and me in tandem, you’ll find it to be a unique experience. It’s a bit like watching the Bynars interact, anime style.
Without her, some of my stories would never have evolved from the random plot bunnies hopping through my head.
I am very thankful to her for helping me round up those plot bunnies.

How many books did you attempt before you were published?
Two full length novels are sitting on the shelf, one of which will never see the light of day (it really was that bad). They both helped me find my voice, though, and laid the groundwork for later worlds.

Do you have any MUST haves to write? Food, drink or time?
I need some sort of media to capture words. I prefer my laptop and Liquid Story Binder for heavy duty writing, but I often draft scenes on my iPad in Notes or jot down outlines in a paper notebook. I’ll even capture random tidbits in my Blackberry.

Which novel is your favorite of your books?
Thus far, Heart’s Sentinel is the only full length novel and wins by default.

Red’s Wolf is the second in the Terra’s Guardians series and novella length, while Evie’s Gift is completely set apart as a steampunk short story with romantic elements.

Who is your favorite character?
I gotta go with Toby. Read Evie’s Gift and you’ll want a Toby too, trust me.

How many books do you have in the work now?
I’m focused on Book #3 in the Terra’s Guardians series, tentatively titled Full Disclosure. I’ve also got outlines for books 4 and 5 with a few rogue scenes already written.

For your next book, What is the name and when is the release date?
Evie’s Gift is a steampunk short story completely separate from the Terra’s Guardians series. It will be released by Decadent Publishing in December as part of their holiday line up.

What inspired you write this book?
I’ve wanted to write steampunk for a while now. Evie and her little companion, Toby, spoke so strongly to me as a pair that I just had to give them an airship to ride, a submarine trying to blow them up and fun adventures to be had.

Do you like writing hot romance scenes?
I love writing hot hanky panky. LOL. It took a bit to warm up in Heart’s Sentinel, and things heated up quickly in Red’s Wolf. I decided to start the flames sooner in Full Disclosure. Chocolate always helps those scenes along, but a healthy helping of Man Candy is always appreciated. ;)

Do you have plans for another new book/series?
Absolutely. The plot bunnies, they are Everywhere.
Readers can look forward to a sci fi romance series from me someday as well as another paranormal romance series. I’d also love to write a follow up to Evie’s Gift and add to my steampunk work.

What is the 1st book you remember reading and falling in love with?
The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle

In fact, I recently attended PhilCon with him as the Principal Speaker.

Who is your favorite author? Favorite series?
Gah. Do I have to pick one?
My favorite series is the Black Jewels by Anne Bishop. I love the way she built the Realms with her passionate and violent Warlord Princes.

While I love Anne Bishop, I also can’t get enough of Lisa Kleypas, Kelley Armstrong, Patricia Briggs, Nalini Singh and Lora Leigh.

What is your favorite quote?
From one of my books? Here’s my favorite snippet shared from my NaNoWriMo project, the next book in the Terra’s Guardians series:
A little mean streak found its way to the surface and he added, “Can't leave a delicious little thing like you out here with just these boys to protect you.”
She recovered quickly, replying with a touch of tart. “Well, I'll be sure to have dinner ready then, so we don't tempt your appetite.”

Do you have a favorite book cover?
Of my current book covers, I have to say Red’s Wolf is my favorite. I love them all, though, and Dara England is a fabulous cover artist!

Naughtiest book you ever read?
If we’re talking naughty, I think it would be Lora Leigh’s Nauti Boy. I’ve got a thing for soldiers. ;)

Favorite color?
Blue. But in eyes, I love hazel eyes that turn blue or green depending on the light. *melts*

Tell us something no one knows.
I have at least one super sekrit alternate identity, maybe more. *nods*
Thank you for your time, please add anything extra you think is relevant or just needs to be said.

I’d like to thank you, Kelly, for reviewing Heart’s Sentinel and hosting me for this author interview. Heart’s Sentinel will be coming to print early next year for those who love the feel of paper under their fingertips.

I’m also looking forward to getting my copy of your 2011 Man Candy Calendar in support of a good cause.

All Mackenzie Stewart wanted was to enjoy her month long Scottish vacation...

Mackenzie Stewart goes to Scotland with her best friend Jenna thinking that she'd just be appreciating the beauty of Scotland and the castle she was staying in. Little did she know that she was about to become part of a dangerous plot.

When touring the castle, Mackenzie sees a painting of one of the past MacRae Lairds. As she is sitting to draw the picture, she is accosted by two wizards who drag her back in time to the 1700s. Once there, they tell her of the role she will play: There is an evil Lord, John Campbell, employing the dark arts who plans to marry and then sacrifice her to further his power. The wizards want Mackenzie to distract the Campbell so that a Scottish Laird, Connor MacRae, can dispose of the man. While still dealing with the shock of being abducted into another time, their carriage is stopped and Mackenzie is abducted again! By Connor MacRae! He has come to take the Campbell's betrothed in order to incite the Campbell's wrath. Connor brings Mackenzie back to his castle and she is immediately met with hostility from his people.

During her time there, Connor starts to like Mackenzie despite himself. He enjoys her company and his desire for her grows with every passing day. When there are attempts on her life, Connor quickly comes to her rescue. He starts to care for her. But then, he is faced with almost undeniable evidence that it was Mackenzie and the Campbell's plan all along to make him like her and get him into bed, in order to distract him. But, in his rage, he manages to listen to Mackenzie when she explains and finally tells, and shows, him that she from another time.

Not long after, Connor takes it upon himself to arrange for him and Mackenzie to get married, a couple days after the return of his brother Liam. After being resistant for a while, Mackenzie finally gives in, believing that it would be worth it to have him for a short time even if he didn't love her the way she loved him. The night before the wedding, there is a big party in their honor and the whole clan comes. Later that night, after Connor confronts her about a conversation he overheard her having, Mackenzie defiantly admits that she loves him.

The next day is the wedding and it's all a blur until she is alone with Connor that night. Despite the fact that she believed that Connor didn't love her, Mackenzie feels it is the most beautiful night of her life. But, it is also tinged with fear when she wakes from another of her recurring nightmares. She has to leave Connor and go to the Campbell; she has to kill the Campbell to keep Connor and his family safe.

They spend the next day together, Connor admits that he loves her, and they have a lovely time. Until, of course, Mackenzie is shot with an arrow. Connor and Liam cauterize the wound and she's out for a couple of days. When she wakes, she persuades Connor to teach her how to use a sword. After a confrontation with Liam, though, she is able to come up with a plan to stage her escape: She asks Liam for help. He would take her out riding and show give her directions to the Campbell's and when Connor asked about her, Liam would say she slipped away from him and, under no circumstances was he to tell Connor that she was in fact pregnant. Their plan is successful. Until Connor figures it out when he can't find her the next morning. Liam tells him about the baby and eventually convinces Connor to wait a few days to go after her, during which time their allies would gather.

For days, Mackenzie is locked in a room at the Campbell's and it's not until then that the wizards come and tell her they need to charm a blade with her blood and only that will kill the Campbell. After they leave, she is shocked to see Connor stepping into her room. She is forced to be heartbreakingly cold to Connor, but her panic makes her force him to hide when the Campbell comes to retrieve her. He shows her that he has captured the MacRaes and their allies, shows off his power. Later that night she expects Connor to come back to her, little does she know he's been captured. But she finds out the next morning when she sneaks her food to a small kid in the dungeon; she also finds out that he thinks she betrayed him.

The next day is the ceremony before her "wedding" to the Campbell. He brings out Connor and she is forced to watch as he is beaten in front of her. But then, Liam and his allies come to help Connor, during which time the Campbell grabs Mackenzie by the throat and holds a knife to it. She manages to escape and draws him out of the room. When he follows, she attempts to kill him with the dagger but she is thwarted, and he then tries to rape her, only to be stopped when Connor pulls him off. After telling Connor to leave the Campbell alone, she manages to get in a few slices with the dagger. When the Campbell flees, she follows and kills him.

At this point, Connor still believes she betrayed him, and she realizes that she has to go back to her time. The wizards take her back and Connor realizes too late that he needs to go after her. He forces the wizards to find a way to bring him to Mackenzie in her time. After months of wasting away, and a particularly ominous dream, he forces them to send him to her right then and there.

Meanwhile, Mackenzie had been spending her time in a state of depression and was frequently by herself. Upon exploring the village, she finds a locket in a small shop with a picture of her inside. A locket that, apparently, Connor had made for her but never had a chance to give to her.

On her last day in Scotland, as she stands before Connor's portrait, she is confronted with the full brunt of her pain. She sits to draw it one last time and, through her tears, hears Connor's voice from behind her. She turns and sees the man standing right behind her and in her joy throws herself at him. Realizing they have no time to waste, they go up to her room. After a bout of lovemaking, Connor sees the locket and tells her about it, and they then discuss how they will stay together. Finally, they decide that Mackenzie would go back to the 1700s with him.

A few years later, Connor and Mackenzie have a gorgeous boy, a beautiful baby girl, and an adorable newborn baby. During that time, their love has never died and Connor and Mackenzie continue to love each other forever....

Book Review: Heart's Sentinel by PJ Schnyder

Review of Heart’s Sentinel

By PJ Schnyder

This book is brought to the masses by Decadent Publishing and decadent it is. I wasn’t sure what to expect from this novel, and wasn’t even sure if this would be considered Erotica or Paranormal Romance. It definitely dances along a very thin high wire…and could easily be pushed over into mainstream Paranormal Romance.

Heart's Sentinel (Terra's Guardians, #1)Heart’s Sentinel is a shape shifter novel with a touch of sci-fi mixed in., just enough to be interesting and not enough to make me run for the hills. PJ Schnyder paints an exciting back drop to the lives of the jaguars within River Gap Pride and the circumstances that bring a new addition to its territory.

Our heroine, MacKenzie Sunton, has come to River Gap to change her entire existence. MacKenzie, a victim of a brutal shape shifter attack, is now a shifter herself. Her every movement and action are foreign to her and she hopes that River Gap and it’s people hold the secret to finding comfort in her new skin. What she does eventually find is safety, family and a love she could never imagine.

I thoroughly enjoyed the storyline and the relationship between our main characters, Mackenzie Sunton and Adam . Adam’s strong and dominant presence make you want to know him and have his strength and protection; He is one hunky leading man.

MacKenzie, though young, is in no way naïve; she is a strong heroine you can relate to and find yourself wishing all too often to be in her shoes when Adam is around.

Though steamy in some parts, the content within is mild erotica…everyone (18+) should enjoy without a fuss. PJ gave us a glimpse of some other supporting character that I can’t wait to see again in the sequel.

A fabulous read, one I will keep and am delighted to share.

This project is close to DemonLover's heart

DemonLover is behind this cause and it's personal:

Why should you buy a Man Candy calendar?
Well, other than the obvious reason of 12 hunks under the cover?
Because it's for a great cause.

Partial proceeds will be donated to the JDRF, Junior Diabetes Research Foundation in my brother's memory.

Brent E. Clisby

Sept. 21 1964- Jan. 1 2004

My older brother Brent died at the young age of 40 after a lifetime battle with Type 1 Juvenille Diabetes.
You might ask why I am using Hot men to bring awareness to the disease and raise money for this cause?
Because these 12 beautiful, talented and caring men represent what a fit and healthy body can look like. They represent a quality of life; one that with awareness, we all can achieve.
All the models are different, but no less striking then the other.

My brother suffered a lifetime due to his childhood diabetes, but many others suffer from this affliction later in life due to weight gain and unhealthy habits.
Taking care of yourself and your body is essential, and sometimes all a Type 2 Diabetic needs to do in order to stop needing medication and lead a perfectly normal life.

I am currently taking pre-orders for the calendars. I am so close to printing the first batch, I just need a few more sold.

I would like to thank all the photographers that gave permission & donated the use of their fabulous photography and the models within them.
Here's a peak of the men you will see within the pages of my 2011 Man Candy calendar
(the actual photos are going to remain a surprise, but you can enjoy these too!)

Take it Off Tuesday...

This week I dedicate Take it Off Tuesday to the body Builders....
God bless them...

Excerpt from Highland Destiny

Here's a teaser, guys:

She glanced toward the dress and the corset-looking undergarments with dread. Hopefully Bronwyn would help her get dressed when she returned. There were a lot of ruffles, she’d seen wedding dresses with less ruffles. But ever brave, Mackenzie wandered toward the bed and picked up the dress, then froze. Yes! Her purse had been salvaged along with the dress! Lip gloss here I come! Mackenzie grabbed her purse and dug through it til she found her compact. She opened it and reached for her lip gloss. She stuck her tongue out at her naked face, and sighed, wishing for mascara---she loved mascara; she would miss mascara. Her sigh turned into an exclamation of joy as she saw her cell phone. Then she immediately felt like an idiot; of course there was no service. Besides, who would I call? she thought, her lips twisting into a grimace, Merlin?

The knock at the door barely captured her attention as she tossed her purse on a chair, not sure she wanted anyone to discover it yet, and resumed trying to scrunch her curls by the fire. They’d be a tangled mess if left to dry on their own. She’d thought it would be Bronwyn, back with the wine, to help her into the pile of clothes on the bed. She was wrong.

“Why are you not dressed?” Connor’s demand had Mackenzie jumping and turning wide, startled eyes to him.

The anger emanating off him was palpable, but rather than being afraid, his high-handed manner infuriated her. Fury was good, it distracted her mind from the uncomfortable emotions that were surfacing at his freshly-shaved-looking-hot-in-a-kilt-self. And he must have bathed as well, because he smelled amazing. He smelled clean; of soap and man, and something else. Something spicy and exotic. She tore her mind from his scent and focused on the black glare he was directing at her. She knew he didn’t like to be disobeyed, but this wasn’t something she could help. It wasn’t her fault that she didn’t know how to put all those clothes on. She bit her lip, thinking that while he may not like to be disobeyed, she didn’t like to be bossed around, especially not by some 18th century highland laird.
So instead of telling Connor that she’d just been waiting on Bronwyn to help her get ready, Mackenzie got annoyed…and bold.

“I’m not going.” Chin tipping defiantly, she crossed her arms across her chest. She knew she was being stubborn, but she didn’t really care.

“You’re damn well going down to dinner.”

“No.” It sounded petulant even to her own ears. His eyes narrowed.
“You’ll come to dinner, and you’ll do it dressed properly, or you’ll dine alone with me and ye won’t be dressed at all.”

“You wouldn’t,” Mackenzie dared.

His voice was flat as he said, “Try me lass,” but he injected a leer into it when he followed with, “I’d enjoy stripping you of your garments.”

The memory of his hands sliding her strap off of her shoulder earlier was still fresh in her head, and she did not doubt he would do as he threatened. So Mackenzie glared at him and snapped, “Fine.” She stalked to the bed and lifted the gown off the bed and looked at the long white nightgown-looking thing with ruffles on the sleeves and at the neck, thinking that it might not be too hard for her to dress herself. But Connor still stood in front of her door, arms crossed and feet planted. Mackenzie stared at him expecting him to leave, or at least turn around, or something, but he looked immovable as a statue. She raised her eyebrows and looked at him expectantly, waiting; she refrained from tapping her foot. But his eyes dared her right back. Her eyebrows snapped down in confusion, and then back up as her eyes widened and she grasped his dare.

Fine she thought, and pursed her lips. Enjoy the show.

Mackenzie slowly unzipped her shorts and stepped out of them. Her shirt slipped over her head, and she stood in her sheer white lace bra and matching bikinis. By modern standards, it wasn’t that sexy, if anything it was boring in comparison to Jenna’s collection. But he stiffened and she felt slightly braver. She heard his swift intake of breath and never letting her eyes drop, even as she felt the heat creep up her cheeks, she unclasped her bra, and tossed it on the floor with her shorts and shirt. Mackenzie figured she might as well go for broke, took a deep breath and slipped out of her panties.

So she stood there naked, daring Connor to look away from her eyes, to look down. And he did. Boy did he ever. Every inch of her naked body felt touched by the heat of his gaze, as if it were his hands on her skin instead of his eyes. Those blue eyes lingered on her belly ring, and when they dropped lower, his eyebrows shot up. She thought it might be because she had recently waxed, but couldn’t be sure. Yet he never said anything, his eyes just continued down. Then once his eyes had finished their appraisal of her figure and were locked back on hers, he looked smug the jerk, she lifted the nightgown-looking garment up over her head, and tied the ribbons at her breasts in a bow. It fit snugly, emphasizing the curves it didn’t hide. Covered in a modest, but sheer shift, Mackenzie felt only slightly better as she looked at the rest of what she would wear. Did the gown go on first, or the stays? And how on earth would she ever lace herself up? Mackenzie bit her lip and ventured a peek at Connor from the corner of her eyes. He was smirking at her, and much as it rankled, she didn’t have a choice; she’d have to ask him for help.
“Umm…what goes next?” her hand encompassed the clothes on the bed.

His smirk became more pronounced, “Are you asking for my help?” He was making fun of her.

“I, uh, no. Of course not! I only meant that perhaps you could send Bronwyn back in. She was supposed to help me get dressed…” Mackenzie stammered out her excuse, but lost steam at the look in his eyes. He looked like he was trying not to laugh. He’d reached her in two strides.

“But I’m already here.” His voice was like velvet.

Connor had spoken softly, practically purred, but Mackenzie still heard the implicit threat…or was it a promise? Damn that man’s sultry voice! She shuddered as he lifted the stays to her body, his fingers brushing her collarbones. He gripped her shoulders, turning her to face away from him, and began to tighten them. The first tug of the strings brought her back hard against him. Her eyes were wide as she turned her head to look up at him.

“Hold the bedpost.” Connor was definitely amused.

Mackenzie turned and put both hands on the bedpost, bracing herself for the next pull. He was finished quickly, although his hands lingered at the small of her back. Mackenzie pressed her hands to her ribs, just under her breasts. Every breath was much shallower than usual, since she was strapped into this corset thing. However, it wasn’t as tight or uncomfortable as she’d thought it would be. It was just really stiff. Connor lifted the grey gown above her head while Mackenzie brought her arms through the sleeves, and he let the gown settle around her until it fell to the floor, brushing the tops of her feet. The laces on this gown were in the front, but Connor’s hands were on them before Mackenzie could lift hers. He tied them at her breasts, and when he tucked the ties into the gown, his large hands brushed the tops of her breasts. The shiver of excitement that ran up her spine was echoed in Connor’s eyes.

Mackenzie stood perfectly still like that, with his hands at her breasts, but not actually touching her. They were both frozen for a few seconds before Connor’s head descended slowly to hers, his lips briefly brushing hers. The kiss was so soft, that if it weren’t for the unmistakable heat, Mackenzie wouldn’t have been completely certain that his lips had touched hers. Her lashes fluttered as her eyes opened and focused on Connor’s face. Her breath caught in her lungs as all the amusement faded from his eyes. He looked at her hungrily as if she were a sweet to be devoured. As if he could mold her will to his own with that look. As if she would let the heavy drowsy feeling coming over her take charge. The naked desire caused her legs to turn to jelly. She swayed toward him and he caught her lips in a fierce kiss that crushed her body to his, and his lips to hers.

Highland Destiny by Laurie Hunsaker

Mackenzie Stewart’s in Scotland for a much-needed vacation. During the castle tour, Mackenzie becomes completely enamored with a painting of one of the previous lairds. Two gentlemen come up behind her and, begging her pardon, they kidnap her, dragging her through time.

The men are sorcerers attempting to end a feud that has plagued their lands for years. Their patron has begun to dabble in the black arts, and between his irrational thirst for power, and his dark secret, the sorcerers are frightened. They believe Mackenzie can break the Stewart curse. They try to convince her to play along with their crazy scheme: marriage to the evil John Campbell.

Before Mackenzie can protest, her carriage is halted and the door thrown open. For a split-second she is arrested by the same beautiful piercing blue eyes that belonged in an oil painting.

Mackenzie then finds herself the victim of a second kidnapping!

Her new captor, however, does nothing but tempt her body and her temper. Believing her to in fact be the betrothed of his mortal enemy the Campbell, Connor originally sets out to capture his enemy’s betrothed. He never thought he would be so attracted to her that he’d want to keep her.

Hi fellow readers! It's the Highland Hussy here, and I know that a while back I'd mentioned my book was coming out soon, well, the release day is next Friday, November 26th!! I thought in honor of release day, I'd offer an ARC to a random commentor this week. So, anyone who comments on any of the Highland Destiny posts this week will be entered into a drawing to win an ARC of my book. Winner will be picked on Thursday. Just make sure you leave an email for me here.

Two exciting new series....

Hello All,
I just finished up 2 books that I absolutely loved.

First, Let's start with THE DARKEST HOUR by MAYA BANKS.
Have you been looking for that next military/black ops series full of excitement? Well look no more.
Maya introduces us to a family, but not just any kind of family, these are the Kelly's. Each one of the Kelly boys have seen there share of war, fighting and some things I'd tell you about...but then I'd have to kill you! LOL
Anyhow our hero, Ethan Kelly, is a Navy Seal...well he's an EX Seal now. In a failed attempt to pull his  marriage back together he left the service and basically did everything possible to push his wife Rachel away. Since the disappearance of his wife over a year ago, Ethan has pulled away from his family and loved ones. Rachels death seems to be eating at Ethan and the guilt of how things were left is tearing him apart.

An anonymous note arrives, Ethan can not believe it...Rachel is alive! Not matter what, Ethan will use his training and risk it all to find her and bring her back,
back from her inprisionment
back to her family
back into his arms.
Nothing will stop him.

Love the book! I give it 4 stars and a big HooYah! Nothing like a ripped, tactical trained hottie to set your blood on fire... and he has a sensitive side. Most of all I enjoyed the cast of characters that comprised  the Kelly family, we have a slew of brothers that I just can't wait to find out about.
Maya is a new author to me, and now a MUST READ & keeper.

Thank you Maya for allowing me to review this book. Look for the next one in the series:
NO PLACE TO RUN coming next month, Dec. 7th!

Next Up!
BLOOD BORN by Linda Howard & Linda Jones
Wait for it....an ORIGINAL story about vampires! Yay!
I gave this book 5 stars. I think it's the original storyline that got me, although I must warn all of you that this is the first in the series so we had a little bit of mapping and setting the rules of the story.
Once warmed up though, it was a smooth ride.
There's nothing I like more then a strong vampire, well they are all strong being vampires, but Luca Ambrus has a presence unlike any other. He is Blood born, vampire by birth...brought into this world by two of his very kind. He has lived for thousands of years and now is an agent for the council..those who govern his kind. He is an enforcer of sorts, sent to dispatch those that betray the secercy and sanctity of the council and what it is to be vampire.

A criptic summons brings Luca to the council's headquarters and the scene of a brutal killing. Along this path Luca crosses another, Chloe Fallon, a conduit. She is just one that stands in the way of a conpiracy to enslave humans and bring vampires out of the shadows. Luca must hunt these rogue vampires, in order to save the human race and Chloe Fallon.
Bonds are created and a link forms between Luca and Chloe, strange and forgein, they both fight what certainly can not be denied.

Absolutely love it, a great read....
