Book Review: The Chief by Monica McCarty

Wow, what an amazing first book! This is book one in the Highland Guard series, and I was more than impressed. Sometimes an author comes along who puts so much history into a novel that it is like reading a textbook. Monica McCarty is NOT one of those, in fact the history of William Wallace and the time of the Bruce was inserted so seamlessly that it hardly felt like I was reading history. It was part of the story, and part of Christina and Tor's romance.
Christina's father is a noble who hates King Edward, and his 3 year imprisonment has left him bitter. When the rumors start of the Bruce wanting to oust King Edward, her father is forefront with wanting in. Christina and her sister Beatrix are to be used as a bargaining tool for the Highland Chief Tor MacLeod. Basically whichever of the girls appeals to him, he can have as a bride. Too bad he doesn't care.
Tor has his own problems. His twin brother abducted a girl to be his bride, and they ran off. A love match. The problem? Tor's clan and his brother's bride's clan don't get along. Meanwhile, he wants to stay neutral in the Edward/Bruce conflict. But he is the best at training soldiers, and the Bruce wants Tor to train an elite guard (about 10 men) who are the best at what they do, tracking, hunting, swords, fighting, etc, and to teach these men to put their differences aside in order to work together. Ms. McCarty has dubbed it "Special Ops in kilts." So so true. Imagine Navy seals made from the fiercest Highland Warriors. Oh and an English knight.
Christina's father has a plan to make Tor agree. Once seeing the ethereal beauty of Beatrix, or the sultry, curvy Christina, Tor should be eating out of his hand, right? Nope. So Christina's father says he will put Beatrix (a beauty, but better suited for the convent, than the marriage bed) in bed with the MacLeod chief and hope that he can "find" them together, thus forcing the marriage. Christina agrees to do it, to save her sister. Meanwhile, Tor wakes to find a voluptuous wench in his bed, and thanking his host for his hospitality, endeavors to put Christina out of his mind. Oops! He takes her in the dark, from behind, and realizes his mistake as her father barges in with "witnesses." Christina realizes 2 things- 1 her father meant for that to happen, and 2 Tor has no desire to marry Christina.
Tor is convinced to both marry Christina, and train the elite soldiers, but he is not happy about it.
Christina wants nothing more than a home and a man to love. Her romantic ideals cause her to believe Tor is that man. Tor, however does his utmost to dash her illusions. And yet he finds himself wanting to please her, and he can't keep her from his mind.
At one point, Christina is used by a spy among the MacLeod people to flush Tor out. She endangers the whole mission by running the missive to Tor, but she also lead the spies right to him! Tor tells her in no uncertain terms that she is to stay out of his life, and to stay away from anything that does not directly relate to her duties as lady of the keep. Her heart broken, Christina runs from him. Unfortunately she is captured by the English and used as a ransom. But she never was one to keep idle; thinking only of escape, Christina does a fairly good job of escaping, until tor and his Special Ops team shows and takes out close to 100 men! And it's believable! Monica McCarty does an amazing job of weaving history and romance plus the added bonus of hunky Highland warriors throughout this book, and I for one, can NOT wait until the end of August to find out more in The Hawk: A Highland Guard Novel

Interview with Shannon K. Butcher

Last week I had the pleasure of interviewing Shannon K. Butcher, Paranormal Romance and Romantic Suspense author. For this interview, questions were pulled from the readers themselves, wanting to know more about her newest series.

Shannon wasn’t always a writer, in fact she was an Engineer for most of a decade, but that field had lost its luster when she no longer needed to work. Shannon explained that not working lasted about 6 weeks before she got bored. For those who don’t already know, Shannon is married to Sci/Fi novelist, Jim Butcher. Over the years Shannon always helped Jim with problems or worked through issues he had with his books. I asked her how great it is to have Jim as a sounding board for her ideas and she agreed; in fact she said that helping him led her to being a writer. In the beginning Shannon actually started by writing over thirty books, of which she finished eight. She said after the eighth book, Jim felt she was ready to submit her work. Shannon submitted her ninth book, which was titled No Regrets. Obviously it takes time and practice to master the craft of writing, her PNR series The Sentinels Wars is proof that she has succeeded.

Here are a few questions, we the readers, wanted to know:
Q: What was your inspiration to write the Sentinel Wars?
A: “I took all the series that I love and put them together, then found a world they could live together in and make the story work.”

Q: How did you decide on the tree tattoo to represent the sentinel’s soul and its longevity?
A: “I needed a ticking clock to show the reader they were running out of time.”

Q: It seems you’ve been blessed by the book cover gods, what do you think?
A: “I have, but the original cover of the first book was horrible! It was pink and had a 70’s clench pose. It was rejected (thank goodness), they then came up with yummy man back which I liked”

Q: Who do we get to see in Living Nightmare?
A: “This is the story of Nika and Madoc”

Q: Are we going to see a book about Torr, the paralyzed Sentinel?
A: “I’m not going to tell you, because if I did it would spoil what’s going on”

Q: You write some great steamy love scenes in this series, have you ever read something of another author that just made you laugh?
A: “sometimes the euphemisms they use are pretty funny, my favorite is MAN CUDDGLED."

Q: How many books are slated for the Sentinel series so far?
A: “I have ideas for 9 and am contracted for 6. Depending on how well the series is doing, it can continue. I know how the series will end, but the in between is constantly evolving”

Q: Book 3, Running Scared has some bombshells like; Who made the Sentinels sterile and Who is the father of Helen in the first book. What shocking things do you have in store for us?
A: “Do you really think I’m going to tell you? There’s a ton of large development to be revealed in book 4”

Q: Will you have another series?
A: “Actually I have a new series that is coming out in March 2011, The Edge. The series is about a Rexas based mercenary company that is run by a woman.”

It was so nice to talk with Shannon, she is so sweet and it was similar to chatting with a long lost girlfriend. Her books are imaginative, exciting, romantic and empowering. Her heroines show great strength and stand by their men as an equals and never in shadow.

Shannon’s next book RUNNING SCARED is out in May, followed by LIVING NIGHTMARE in November. I look forward to more in this series and the next; there are many new adventures to come.

Wages of Sin by Jenna Maclaine

Sometime it's wonderful when you find a book or series by chance. This was the case when I stumbled across Jenna Maclaine's Cin Craven series. I offered to read and judge some books for the upcoming RomCon and actually received Book 3 in this very series. Well that wouldn't do, I cannot read them out of order! I would have to get books 1 & 2.

So I started the journey with Wages of Sin and dove into the world of Cin Craven and 18th century England. Her name wasn't always Cin; in fact she was named Dulcinea Cravin at birth as well as handed down a very rare talent. Dulcinea is a witch, descended from a long and powerful lineage of MacGregor witches. She, like her mother before her, was born with the magic inside her, not merely taught the art of witchcraft. In this first novel and through a series of events Dulcinea will come into her full power, lose the ones she holds dearest, find the man of her dreams and conquer unimaginable evil.

This novel is filled with wicked lust, true love, intoxicating adventure, unbelievable fantasy and of course a werewolf, a demon and vampires, Oh my! It was a pleasure to take this journey back in time with the author and a delight to know there’s more to come.

Please add this to your To-Read list as well as her other 2 novels; Grave Sins & Bound in Sin. They do not disappoint.

RUNNING SCARED by Shannon K. Butcher

First let me start with saying that this book doesn’t actually release until May, but Shannon K. Butcher was nice enough to send me a copy to review. For those of you that have taken my advice and ran out to get the first 2 books in this series; Burning Alive and Finding the Lost, terrific. For those who haven’t yet, I’ll try not to reveal too much.

This 3rd book in the series is called Running Scared and in it we re-visit the character Lexi, the spunky waitress and Helen’s friend from the diner and Zach, the Sentinel warrior that has been obsessed with her since they first met there.

In the first book, Lexi is on the run and believes that her friend Helen has been kidnapped by the men from the diner. She is doing everything possible to keep any of those men, the Sentinels from finding her. She was brought up with the belief that the Sentinels were to be feared, that they only wanted to enslave humans, drink their blood and feast on their bodies.

Zach has been crazed with the notion of finding Lexi, he knows that she is the ONE. She is a woman of his race, one of the Theronai, the one woman that can save his soul. He will do anything to locate her and make sure she is safe with him and the other Theronai.
The heroine in this was so frustrating; she was so negative and unconvinced by any actions Zach made to show her his true intentions. This warrior bends over backwards to assure her that he is the good guy, but still Lexi plots behind his back. She then endangers the entire Theronai compound, Zach and herself in the process. I always lean toward the rule of “gather the evidence” and “give the benefit of the doubt”, but doubt seems to be the one emotion that she clings to. Lexi has built a wall around her, her heart and blocked out her emotions. Zach definitely has his work cut out for him in cracking this nut.
We will discover two amazing developments in this book; one is that the reason for all the Theronai men being sterile, is not due to their enemy the Synestryn; but because of one of their own. Second, we learn that the Theronai women are not so rare, there’s more to be found and some of them are even related. Things also get a little steamy between Torr and Grace, I can’t wait to find out what happens to him and if they can cure what has paralyzed his body from the neck down.

The characters and the stories keep evolving and I for one am hooked and cannot wait to find out what happens next. The 4th book in the series is titled LIVING NIGHTMARE and scheduled to release in November this year. This book will finally tell us the whole story of Nika and Madoc, hopefully relieving some of the growing tension and finding a solution to saving Madoc’s soul.
Great Book!

Gerard Movie Mix, HOT Stuff

Found this and had to share!! So HOT!

Tantalizing Tuesday...

Oh Gerard, What ever are we going to do with you?
I've been on a Gerard Butler kick and recently rented a few of his past movies. This photo is from the movie Atilla, yes he played the Atilla the Hun. This movie was not good. But the endless scenes of our star in masculine Hun warrior attire or Greek togas gets 5 Stars for visual appeal. Look at him! He is a sexy thing with that long hair and gorgeous eyes. WOW!
I went to see BOUNTY HUNTER this week and thought it was great. A good romantic comedy and wonderful "DATE" movie with my hubby.
My only wishes was that there was more then one scene of Gerard in a towel! Not enough skin in this one.
I also rented Gamer "snore" can you say too much visual effects and action? Well, the movie didn't allow Gerard to shine, in male physique or acting skills. But we still love you!

Happy Release Day, Monica!

I had the great opportunity of interviewing Monica McCarty this past week. Not only is she an amazing writer, but she is one of my favorites, and has been since I first picked up Highlander Untamed. One of my favorite tidbits about Monica, is that she got interested in the Scottish Highlands, and writing on our sexy alpha males, by studying law at Stanford! In her third year, she was writing a comparative law paper on the Scottish clan system and feudalism, thus leading to her love affair with hunky Highlanders.
Her past two trilogies (The MacLeods and the Campbells) have taken place during the same timeframe- late 1590s, early 1600s. Today, with The Chief hitting bookshelves, Monica shows us what she can do with the 14th century. I asked her why change what’s proven very successful, and her answer was
“I love the early 1600s, but when I decided to write what I called the “Special Ops in Kilts” idea that I’d been banging around for a while (8 years!), I needed a historical framework that would work, i.e. a reason for an elite group of warriors to join forces. The Scottish Wars of Independence were pretty much the natural choice. I was a huge fan of the Braveheart movie and especially intrigued by Angus MacFayden’s portrayal of Robert the Bruce. But it left me wondering how this “traitor” went on to become one of Scotland’s greatest kings. The Highland Guard picks up where Braveheart left off. Literally. THE CHIEF opens with William Wallace’s death.”
What an intriguing idea! So next I wanted to see how she picked the title for the new trilogy, the names being, The Chief, The Hawk, and The Ranger.
“I don’t want to give too much away, the how and why are explained in THE CHIEF, but they are basically “noms de guerre”—war names. There is kind of a funny story for how I came up with the list of possibilities. I knew I needed a bunch of strong and “alpha” sounding names, so I naturally—being the wife of an ex-baseball player—went straight to sports teams. All the names except for maybe one are from sport teams.”

My next question focused on how Monica writes. I’ve always been interested in how some writers write by the seat of their pants, and others plan out minute details way ahead of time. Monica seems to fall somewhere in the middle.

“I wrote my first book (what became HIGHLANDER UNTAMED) “seat of the pants,” i.e. no outline at all. But once I realized you needed a synopsis to sell, I started writing that first and then proceeding from there. Once I sold, having the good working synopsis became even more important because I need to submit it to my editor for approval before I start writing. So, now I’m pretty much a “tweener.” Not a pantser but also not a plotter. I like to have a good flight plan and know where I am going, but leave some room to figure it out (or change course) along the way.”

And following that line of questioning, I also asked Monica if her side characters “speak” to her, telling her they would like their own story, but she feels she pretty much knows who will get his or her own story ahead of time.
I wondered if since her release dates are all fairly close together, how that changes the way she writes?

“My deadlines have been crazy since I sold, in order to take advantage of the wonderful opportunity Ballantine/Random House gave me to come out in back-to-back months. I have been writing on 5 and 6 month deadlines, which when you factor in planning, synopsis writing, copy edits for prior books, etc. leaves me about 4 ½ to 5 months of actual writing time. Ideally, I would love to have about 7 months to write, with 8 between deadlines. I am a very slow writer and, as you’ve probably noticed, my books are long. I’m basically writing from 10 to 6, M-F, but it’s sometimes longer. Whatever it takes to reach my word count. I was working 7 days a week, but the past year I’ve forced myself to stop writing on the weekends to spend time with my family. It was getting ridiculous. This means I have to be very disciplined about my weekday schedule, devoting it solely to writing the current manuscript. That means that I have to say “no” a lot, unfortunately, to other things.”

One of the things I’ve always wanted to know is if Monica has written anything that was never published, and if so, would we ever see them?
“Yes, I am on my eleventh manuscript, but that will actually be my ninth published book (THE RANGER). The third and fourth books I wrote are Regency set historicals that have never really been marketed. The first one was a Golden Heart finalist. It garnered a few rejections before my agents pulled it and decided to try to sell the Scottish books instead. I definitely hope to see them published some day. I’m just waiting for the right time (and enough of a break in my schedule) to bring them out.”

And last, I asked Monica if she had any advice her fans or to any aspiring writers reading this,
“This business can be very discouraging, but don’t give up. Keep writing, keep honing the craft and learning about the industry. RWA has been invaluable to me.I think I have some of the best readers in the business! People have been so wonderful. It is seriously the most amazing feeling to open up an email.”

Today's mail...

Okay, so I was all excited because I got mail today. I was expecting 2 books from Amazon:

Grave Sins
both by Jenna Maclaine. But of course those were not the books!

What I received today was from Paperback Swap:
Where's my Hero. Anthology by Lisa Kleypas, Julia Quinn & Kinley MacGregor

I guess this will help with my highlander fix.

Review: Dark Embrace by Brenda Joyce

The Masters of Time series, Dark Embrace is another wonderful book you shouldn’t miss. This book’s focus is Aiden, the strikingly gorgeous and flirtatious highlander with his passion for collecting items from the future. But that Aiden is now gone, the warrior who was once full of life can only now focus on death and revenge. He can not rest until he vanquishes his evil father, until the man or beast that took his son’s life is gone forever or he is dead also.

Brianna is a Rose woman, gifted with the ability to feel other’s pain or joy; she is an empath. But nothing explains why she is suddenly stricken with unbearable pain and anguish. She can feel his hurt and despair and the agony of death approaching, but how could this be possible? It’s Aiden, the Master she only met briefly last year, who lives in the 1400’s. How can she be feeling him across time?

Aiden’s sudden arrival and kidnapping of her only to whisk her away to the past, brings her face to face with an entirely different man. Aiden has changed, he is dark and more dangerous then she could ever imagine. But fear is not what she has inside, it is something more. She has a need to heal him and help him fight the demons inside and out.

I believe that this is my favorite book in the series so far. The story drew me in and kept me highly entertained. There are surprises, heartbreak and very hot and steamy moments included with this novel. An excellent book and quick read. Enjoy!

Coming Soon! Interview with Lara Adrian

Although Lara's schedule is super busy right now, she has agreed to do an interview with me.

For those would don't know who Lara Adrian is (which surely must be a sin if you don't), she is the author of the incredible "Breed" series. This series can easily stand among that of JR Ward and Sherrylin Kenyon for the complexity of the characters and journeys you take with them.
Here's a summary of the books:
Part human, part otherworldly, the Breed has lived among humankind for thousands of years, maintaining a tentative peace built on secrecy, power, and the dark justice carried out by the formidable warriors of the Order.
But now, a blood war within the race is set to ignite. Vampires are going Rogue in startling numbers, feeding without discretion, killing humans in the streets. It is up to the Order to stop the spreading threat of Rogue domination--and in so doing, each of the warriors will be forced to confront private demons, darkest secrets, deepest fears. Some will know triumph, some will know loss, but each warrior can count on one thing: Love, when it finds him, will often come at the worst possible moment, with the least likely woman . . . and it will bring each of these powerful males to his knees.

All we need now is a group of "role players" on Facebook to bring her series to BDB and Dark Hunter status, LOL.

If you haven't started thie series, RUN to your nearest bookstore or call your book fanatic friend and borrow them.

Here is the series order:
Kiss of Midnight
Kiss of Crimson
Midnight Awakening
Midnight Rising
Veil of Midnight
Ashes of Midnight
Shades of Midnight

Anyhow, I wanted to know what YOU my followers would like to know from Lara. Please comment and let me know what you want me to ask her in my interview!

REVIEWS: The Sentinel Wars by Shannon K. Butcher

I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this series when I picked up the first book on a whim, but what I found was truly magical. Shannon K. Butcher has managed to create a interesting world of great warriors and monsters, hidden here in the present. Three unknown races live and exist among the humans, some lurking in the shadows of the night and others walking among us and saving our human hides.
Theronai warriors live for centuries and are born with a mark that grows as they do. Once mature there mark begins to change, wither and eventually die taking their soul with it. The warriors only hope if to find female of the Theronai bloodline and bind himself to her, stopping and reversing this steady spiral towards death.

Book 1- Burning Alive
Helen Day is plaged with visions of her own firery death and the handsome face that will witness it. She has seen it replayed over and over, fire will once again take from her and she knows there will be no way to stop it. Helen is panicking, can it be? She sees him across the diner. The handsome face, dark hair and the eyes, it's him. The man who will watch her burn alive.

Drake lounges across the diner's booth, acting as a human would, sharing a late dinner with two of his fellow Theronai warriors. They had a mission and it was to begin at the coming nightfall. He suddenly realized she was hiding behind her menu, there across the room. A beautiful woman was trying to figure out a way to get out of the diner without being noticed and drawing his attention, at least that's what he sensed. Why on earth was this human female afraid of him? Drake felt her fear and was also drawn to her. He must find out what is going on and assure her that he was a man that protected humans, not a man to be feared. He must find out who this woman is, and find out right now.

Book 2- Finding the Lost.
Andra Madison was the finder of lost children. Well, not really lost, but those that had been abducted from thier loving families and taken by the monsters. She didn't know what they were actually called, just that the children had to be saved or they would die a very painful death. She couldn't let that happen and wouldn't, if she had anything to do with it. Tonight's mission had brought her to the old abandoned warehouse. A small boy, Sammy, had been taken by the monsters and she knew it. She had tracked them here and could hear the deep sobs of fear that Sammy made from inside the building. How was she going to get him out and stay alive when there are two of them in there. Two hairy wolflike, no not wolves, just terrible, hidious monsters.

Tonight Paul was on the trail of a Theronai female. He, Logan and Madoc were following the scent of her bloodline, hoping that tonight's road trip wouldn't be another bust. Logan said that they were getting very close. just then, there in the light of the SUV she stood at the entrance of the abandoned warehouse. He could see her poised to kick in the door, then splinters flew and she began to charge into the building and he saw that she was also not alone. Two demons began their appproach to attackher head-on, she didn't flinch and she had no hesitation. What a strong woman this was, he must help her, protect her and most importantly; find out if this woman was a Theronai female, his female.

Running Scared, Book 3 is scheduled to be released in May 2010.

From the back cover: Lexi Johns has one purpose: to free her best friend from the hands of the Sentinels. And Zach, the Sentinel she has been running from for months, has one goal: to convince her that their destinies are entwined. For the magic that Zach has absorbed could destroy him if he doesn't find the woman who can channel it for him. And he knows Lexi is the one.

From an early age, Lexi has been taught to fear the Sentinels. And now she is an agent of a group out to destroy them. So when Zach finds her, it is Lexi's chance to strike at the heart of the Sentinels. But, as Lexi sees Zach's courage, selflessness, and honor, she begins to doubt her beliefs -- and is faced with an unbearable choice.

I'm very excited to find this new series and add tit to my collection of favorites. Shannon K. Butcher has a easy going style to her writing. Her words float from the page and dance in your mind, taking you on this amazing journey. You will be entraced and enthraled in the ultimate battle of good and evil.

You can find out about more of Shannon K. Butcher and her books at her website:
