Book Review: Ten Ways to Be Adored When Landing a Lord by Sarah MacLean

Happy Release Day, Sarah!

Ten Ways to Be Adored When Landing a LordTen Ways to Be Adored When Landing a Lord by Sarah MacLean

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I was so excited for this book. So much so, that I searched 4 stores yesterday with my 3 year old to find it a day early. I read it overnight...got hardly any sleep, which as any of you with small children know, is never fun, and it was all worth it!

This book was fabulous.

At the beginning of each chapter is a small bit from the ladies' magazine "Pearls and Pelisses," which has decided that a series of articles is in order on How to Land a Lord. Lord Nicholas St. John is given the distinct honor of being that lord. He was less than thrilled. Becoming London's Most Eligible Bachelor really wasn't working for him, so when his friend, the Duke of Leighton, came to ask Nick's help in finding his younger sister who had run away, Nick jumped at the chance.

Meanwhile, Lady Isabel is sending off yet another unwanted suitor. Her father is a gambler, and has left Isabel with, well, nothing.

"We are betrothed."
"And by we...I take it that you mean..."
"You. And I. Are to be married."
Isabel shook her head. "I am sorry, you are...?"
"Asperton. Lionel Asperton."
"And how is it we became betrothed, Mr. Asperton?"
"I won you...Your father wagered you."
"One hundred pounds."
"Well. That's more than usual."

Apparently her father had wagered her seven times before! And every single time hurt. I loved Isabel from the get-go. She was strong, valiant, and honest. Humble enough to try to repair her own roof, and strong enough to ensure her ten year old brother grew up to be the earl their father should have been.

Nick was in Isabel's town looking for a certain duke's sister, when he saw Isabel. The first meeting between Nick and Isabel was adorable, and I cracked up that Nick saved her from a run away cart in the style of Matthew McCaughnehey, and Isabel was irritated with him for that! Nick didn't know what to do with a woman who didn't fall all over herself trying to "land" him.

Unfortunately Isabel had to sell her most prized possessions for reasons I won't say (Highland Hussy zips her lips against spoilers today). If we remember, Nick deals with antiquities, and Isabel needs to have a collection of marble statues appraised and then sold. She asks for his help, and since he assumes Isabel might know about Leighton's sister, he agrees to see her marbles.

And the two irritate each other to no end. Isabel is so remarkable, and Nick is immediately infatuated with her and her strength. Isabel is afraid to trust, and afraid to love. All she believes in is what her own hands have helped build. She has every reason to have no faith in men, and yet Nick persuades her to trust him, to let him shoulder some of her burden...and when she finally does, she finds out he had lied to her.

I loved how Nick was willing to stay and fight for Isabel. Too many times, the hero leaves, but not Nick-he went to her in the middle of the night, and it was so wonderful.

But Isabel was trying to convince both herself and her friend that she didn't love Nick and Nick overheard.I actually had to put the book down and take several deep breaths before I was able to pick it up again!

For her entire life, she had been afraid to take what she wanted for fear of failure. She was afraid to leave Townsend Park and face the gossip her father caused; she was afraid to send James to school for fear he might turn into her father.
And she had been afraid to love Nick for fear of losing herself.
Now, however--without him--she was lost anyway.

The way she decided to get him back was beautiful. I loved seeing Callie and Gabriel and Juliana again, and I love love LOVED! the ball.

This book is a must-read. Whatever you are reading right now, drop it and start this book. It was fabulous. I canNOT wait for Eleven Scandals to Start to Win a Duke's Heart.

Book Review: Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake by Sarah MacLean

Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a RakeNine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake by Sarah MacLean

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

In honor of Ten Ways to Be Adored When Landing A Lord releasing tomorrow, I thought I'd post my review for Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake.

A big fat 5 star rating! 5 shining stars!!!

I think that I wasn't expecting to like this book as much as I did, but it is far and above my absolute favorite book this year. (even above Pride Mates which as you all know, is a huge favorite of mine!) I loved how Callie, one day tired of being nice, proper, boring Callie, just decided that was it! She had lived on the outskirts of the ballroom long enough. She may never be the belle of the ball, but she would not die an unkissed old spinster! She wrote out a list of things she wanted to do. For example, shoot a gun, or ride a horse astride, get a kiss...

That kiss is what leads to rake Gabriel St. John.

She'd had a crush on him since she was 18. And she finds herself at his front door in the middle of the night. And as she bargains for her kiss, Gabriel bargains for her time as a sponsor to help his half-sister enter society.

Gabriel is more than shocked to find Lady Calpurnia in his chambers in the middle of the night, but he is even more shocked at how much he enjoys kissing her.

while Callie is busy trying to discover life, and who she is, (she tries whiskey in a public tavern!), Gabriel is trying to keep tabs on her so that his sister's entrance into the ton isn't compromised. And through this all, through Callie's adventures of sneaking into a men's club to fence, gambling, kissing- Gabriel is there. And he is falling madly in love with her. Enough so that after he realizes that he just took Callie's virginity in a men's club (yes, you heard me-a gentlemen's club!), he proposes marriage. Well, of course Callie turns him down.

She doesn't want him to marry her because he feels he has to.

He convinces her to marry him that he truly does want to marry her, and they are fabulously happy for all of 1 day, before drama ensues. Another suitor, Oxford, has been pursuing Callie for the sake of a bet...a bet with Gabriel! Gabriel bet that Oxford wouldn't get Callie to marry him, but in the sense that Callie would never marry a jackass like Oxford. But when it all comes out into the open...wow, what emotion! I cried. I bawled like a baby over the heartbreak Callie felt, over the betrayal...and Gabriel was so wonderful. ::sigh::

There was a duel at the end of this book. I'll leave it at that for everyone else to find out what the duel was about, who fought it and who got shot.

I loved the ending of this book, I loved the beginning of this book. every single word in this book. If I could rate it above 5 stars, I would.

Nights in Rodanthe by Nicholas Sparks

I recently powered through 2 audio books since I've been working my @ss off, and thought I'd share one with you.

Nights in Rodanthe
by Nicholas Sparks

At forty-five, Adrienne Willis must rethink her entire life when her husband abandons her for a younger woman. Reeling with heartache and in search of a respite, she flees to the small coastal town of Rodanthe, North Carolina, to tend to a friend's inn for the weekend.

But when a major storm starts moving in, it appears that Adrienne's perfect getaway will be ruined-until a guest named Paul Flanner arrives. At 54, Paul has just sold his medical practice and come to Rodanthe to escape his own shattered past. Now, with the storm closing in, two wounded people will turn to each other for comfort-and in one weekend, set in motion feelings that will resonate throughout the rest of their lives.
How is it possible that one man could have so much joy, pain, passion & heartache continuously flowing from his heart directly into his pen? Nicholas Sparks never fails to amaze me and hold me captivated.
Being a mother, divorced, betrayed and knocking on 40's door; I was able to indentify with the heroine in the novel and I think you all will too. If you've seen the movie, then you already know. BUT if you haven't, please take the time to read the book before you do.
The story that's layed out before us is one of hope, anguish, joy, love, anticipation and ultimate heartbreak; and that's just the good parts! Actually, it all good. Fate or circumstances neither Adrienne or Paul could have ever dreamed, brought them to Rodanthe and what they found there was like no other.
Life can change in an instant, but for them it stood still; those five days laid a new path in each of thier lives forever.
I'm not the sappy crying type, but the sheer emotion that is put from pen to paper is extrodinary. You will cry. Your heart will skip a beat. But mostly your own being will wish to have 1/10th of the moments and connections shared by the characters in this book.
Thank you Nicholas Sparks for giving a piece of your heart and soul in this one, a fabulous read.

Book Review: Atlantis Betrayed by Alyssa Day

Atlantis Betrayed (Warriors of Poseidon, #6)Atlantis Betrayed by Alyssa Day
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
"Jack the Ripper must have been a vampire.

What a great first line. I was hooked.
This book is a quick and fabulous read about her studly Warriors of Poseidon. Here we have Christophe, our bad boy warrior, who while trying to retrieve an aquamarine that belongs in Poseidon's trident, meets the Scarlet Ninja. The Scarlet Ninja is a modern-day Robin Hood figure who robs from the rich and gives to the poor of London. But why is the Scarlet Ninja needed at all?

Most of her Warriors of Poseidon books are great, but this one took the vampire's places in human governments to a new level.

How often do we read about vampires who believe humans to be nothing more than just sheep? Quite a bit, IMHO. But Alyssa Day takes us farther, and distinguishes her series from others. In this series, we've seen the vampires not only "come out of the coffin" (to borrow a line from Sookie Stackhouse), but they are in human governments and have "rights" now.
In Atlantis Betrayed, we see that the job rates are at an all-time low, and that vampires in London have basically turned back time-they behave as wealthy nobles while all the humans are starving and out of work. Time to pick up the pitchforks and torches, my fellow villagers!

When Christophe meets up with the Scarlet Ninja, he learns one of two things. 1-The Scarlet Ninja is a girl! and 2-she wants the same thing he does-The Siren (the aquamarine).

So what to do, what to do..hmm..how bout follow her home and sleep with her? Yep! That's just what happens...and wow is it hot!
Alyssa Day got naughty with this book.

With Christophe being a bad boy, it only makes sense for him to be really bad...he he...At one point, Lady Fiona (the Scarlet Ninja is a children's book author! and Scottish nobilty), is all hot and bothered from her interactions with Christophe, so she does what any woman would do...She imagines him touching her as she pleasures herself. But soon her fingers are joined by another's-Christophe had heard Fiona sigh his name.

"He reached out, cupping her breasts in his big hands, and her nipples visibly tightened and hardened further. He smiled and looked up at her. "They want me to suck on them, don't they?"
She shivered, staring at the deep, glowing pools of his eyes.
"Tell me," he coaxed, "Say the words."
"I can't---I don't---" she stumbled, flustered, "Ladies don't talk dirty."
He laughed, and the rich sound of it sent a wave of heat through her. "Ah, but warriors do, my beautiful ninja. So let me tell you that I'm going to lick and suck and bite those ripe berries until you cry out for me to do the same to your hot, wet cunt. Then I'm going to tease and torture you until you come in my mouth, and finally, finally my ninja, I'm going to plunge my cock in you so hard and so far that you come, screaming, over and over."

Now I'm not one for the "c" word, but that was hot! Alyssa Day cracked me up, because a couple sentences down, she used the word "bum." The "c" word and "bum" in the same sex scene! Depending on whose point of view the scene was from, depended on which words were used. Christophe thought the "c" word once more and those were the only 2 times I saw it used. Fiona also insisted he use a condom-not often seen in pnr...even though Christophe said he couldn't carry diseases or knock her up, bravo Fiona for making him wrap it up anyway!

They partnered up to retrieve the gem, BUT a monkey wrench was thrown into their plans when someone else took the gem from and the Scarlet Ninja got blamed for that and the deaths of 3 Shifters. A bit of background on the gem-it can enthrall Shifters, masses of them. So the vamps want to enthrall Shifters and rule the world. But the fae want it too. So now we have to not only get the gem, but find out who took it? Fae? Vampires? Shifters?

The fae being thrown in here made for some tricky plot devices, and a quick spoiler:

One of the warriors leaves with a Fae princess to Summerland for 3 fae years, and uh oh... what will happen?

I love how Alyssa Day had Christophe save Fiona from the bad guys (not spoiling this one--*the Highland Hussy zips her lips*) And the ending was great. Alyssa Day has such a similar sense of humor to mine, that all the jokes and sarcastic comments were spot on.

A definite recommend on both the book and series-which other than just being different from other pnr series because it has Atlantean Warriors in it, has a whole new plot direction from any I've read before.

Go forth and read, you'll love this one!

Book Review: Yours for Eternity by Hannah Howell, Alexandra Ivy, & Kaitlin O'Riley

Yours For EternityYours For Eternity by Hannah Howell

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

"Highland Blood" by Hannah Howell-4 stars.
Definitely her best work yet, no doubt. It ended a bit abruptly, but I loved the red-haired "witch" (healer) who saved and tried to rear a vampire halfling. And after a couple years, when she realized he needed more than she could give, she tried to find the MacNachton clan...and did. But not before she got chased down by the Hunters (humans who feel they're doing God's work by exterminating the vampires). That's when our hero stepped in and saved her and the little boy. You can guess the rest :)
Sweet story, great action.

Alexandra Ivy's "Taken by Darkness"-5 stars
Fantastic addition to her series. Anyone who has read her Guardians of Eternity series will love this. It's about Dante's brother, but this takes place in the 1800s.
Very cool story about a vampire who meets a woman who is his mate, but he's in denial about it so he cavorts in Italy for 6 months before returning to London.
She is the only woman who has ever said no to him, and he intends to persuade her otherwise.
Love the story-loved it!

"Immortal Dreams" by Kaitlin O'Riley-4 stars
I loved this story. I absolutely loved the vampire still looking for his long lost soul mate. Beautifully written, and I will definitely read this author again.
So why not a 5 star you ask? I'll tell you.
At the end, Grace's controlling and tyrant of a mother-in-law never "got hers" so-to-speak. She had Grace committed for crying out loud! And Grace and Phillip just escaped like thieves in the night. It was soo unsatisfying an ending I bumped the story down a full star! grr...I'd have LOVED her MIL to have at least been kicked out. When Grace actually stood up to Mary, I was like "Finally! This is what we've been waiting for!" But the story itself and the love was sweet and beautiful.

Only 5 days until we walk! Who's with me?

Breaking News:

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger just vetoed $52 million that would have restored funding for critical HIV/AIDS programs throughout the state.

In the face of this crippling cut, a devastating blow to those living with HIV/AIDS and to those at greatest risk for the disease, we must fight harder. Where government has turned its back on those in need, we must step in for our community and re-double our efforts to raise vital funds for AIDS Walk Los Angeles.

"With the funding restoration, the governor had a second chance to do the right thing,” said APLA Executive Director Craig E. Thompson. "Unfortunately, his legacy will be marred by his failure to sustain more than a decade of progress in fighting AIDS in California."

Now, more than ever, AIDS Project Los Angeles and the 21 other AIDS service organizations who benefit from AIDS Walk Los Angeles need your support.

There are five days before AIDS Walk Los Angeles…and there is still plenty of time to make a huge difference in lives people living with HIV/AIDS.

Book review: Chill Factor by Sandra Brown

Cleary, North Carolina, is a sleepy mountain town -- the kind of place where criminal activity is usually limited to parking violations. Not so, lately. Four women have disappeared from Cleary over the past two years. And there's always a blue ribbon left near the spot where each of the women was last seen. There are no bodies, no other clues, and no suspicion as to who their abductor might be. And now, another woman has disappeared without a trace.

Chill FactorIt is to this backdrop that Lilly Martin returns to close the sale of her mountain cabin, marking the end of her turbulent eight-year marriage to Dutch Burton, Cleary's chief of police. Dutch's reluctance to let her go isn't Lilly's only obstacle. As she's trying to outrun a snowstorm, her car skids on the icy road and strikes a man who emerges from the woods on foot. She recognizes the injured man as Ben Tierney, whom she'd met the previous summer. They're forced to wait out the storm in the cabin, but as the hours of their confinement mount, Lilly begins to wonder if the greatest danger to her safety isn't the blizzard outside, but the mysterious man right beside her.

Is Ben Tierney the feared abductor? Or is he who he claims to be...her rescuer from harm and from the tragedy that haunts her?
I am always game for one of Sandra Brown's books, they are generally a "no-brainer", knowing you'll get a good read no matter what. This was no exception. Sandra is a wizard at setting the stage in this thriller, making the reader grasp at any indication that Ben Tierney isn't a murderer. The sexual desire and tension between Tierney and Lilly can be cut with a butter knife, thick and daunting. You will struggle to piece together all the facts and decide for yourself the answers to the basic questions, Good or Evil? Guilty or not guilty?
The little town of Cleary is that of a soap opera, drama, teenage preganancy, gossip, betrayal and even may/december romances. Yet for how small this little town is, no one seemed to notice they had a murderer in thier midst. Sherriff Dutch Burton is determined to catch this killer and save his wif... ex-wife from the man she was stranded alone with. Dutch's jealious tempers rise, as does the heat between Tierbey and Lilly in the cabin high on Cleary moutain.

Book Review: Mr. B Gone by Clive Barker

Have you ever been in the bookstore and not really looking for a book in particular? Ever been drawn to a random piece of literature?
When walking through B&N one day I came across this book. Clive Barker? I remember him, he had something to do with the Dracula movie right? I am not the usual horror reader and know very little about that genre's authors.
But, I was drawn to this book. Maybe it was the black weathered cover, the antiqued pages or maybe even the first line in the novel to pulled me into this adventure.

"Burn this book", yes, those were the words that grabbed me and held vice like and unyielding until the very end... How could I not read on, find out why? I couldn't imagine what circumstances would ever require the burning of a precious book, could I?

It looks harmless enough, right? I mean the book itself from the outside. You'll never guess what lies within... A demon.
A demon by the name of Jakabok Botch, Mr. B for short.
He is quite a compelling character, testing your very wits and sturdiness of your stomach all in the same breath. He is all that is terrible and vile, yet I might find that I have contracted some feelings towards him...
Could it be compassion? Love? Envy?
What ever the end result, it is the journey in the novel that will cast it's spell upon you. Prepare to be delighted and appalled simultaneously. This novel, book, journal, no matter not what you call it, will set the bar for all that you read from this very moment forward. This masterpiece is one that must be shared and passed on again and again.
What will you find inside?
The very battle of good and evil, heaven and hell; love and hate...
Don't be fooled by it's small stature, dusty cover and simple design; the story within this small book is immense in content and beyond any expectations that I could have had.

Get it, Read it
You'll love it.

Oh where, Oh where has DemonLover gone?

OK, did you think I had deserted you and left you alone and Man Candyless??
Never! I, like so many others, have a day job. Which at this time is very busy and I find it hard to juggle blog, work and family sometimes.

But I have returned! Miss me?
I thought I'd give you a little something... Maybe a bit of THEO and a promise for a review later tonight on the most fabulous book EVER! Yes, it's true... I find time to read when running on all cylinders...okay, so I listen to audio books while driving from appointments.
So stay tuned, it's a Horror book... 5 stars... and have fabulous Demons and Angels. Do you know of that which I speak?

You'll see...

For now, feast your eyes on this:

Your Welcome!
