Scandal Wears Satin by Loretta Chase

Scandal Wears Satin (The Dressmakers, #2)Scandal Wears Satin by Loretta Chase
My rating: 3 of 5 flames

This is my first Loretta Chase novel, and while I can definitely say it won’t be my last, I will also add that I was slightly disappointed. I think I expected more from her. I almost didn’t finish it twice. At one point, my ARC expired (I was about halfway through) and I had to get the book myself just to find out what happened!

Lady Clara is compromised by Lord Adderley, a bankrupt jerk who took advantage of Lady Clara on purpose because he needs her dowry. Lady Clara is the bestand most important customer of Sophy and her sisters’ dress shop Maison Noirot. She runs off, and Sophy devises a way to bring her back. Longmore is under the impression he is saving Clara, but Sophy is the brain behind the operation. They are led on a merry chase but eventually find and bring Clara back. Sophy of course has a grand plan that she is hatching to keep Clara from marrying Adderley, and it works, but I wanted more interaction between Sophy and Longmore, and less focus on Clara’s problems. I think it could have been wrapped up sooner so that Sophy’s ending didn’t feel so rushed.

I liked Sophy, I think it’s hard not to, but I also felt she became rather tedious at the end with all of her plots, and schemes and circular logic. I wanted just one straightforward conversation between her and Longmore, if I could have had that, I would’ve chocked up the rest to her vivacious and charming personality. Unfortunately I felt like her charm wore off towards the end.

I don’t mind a hero who isn’t smarter than the heroine. That being said, I feel like Longmore was given this reputation of being nothing more than a prettyboy, a lover of women, and he doesn’t like to think too hard, yet I’m not sure he was as stupid as we were supposed to think. He is constantly saying how thinking hurts his brainbox, and Sophy is saying how he should just leave the thinking and plotting to her, the author tells us he’s not a thinker, yet he is I’d say above average intelligence (i.e. a normal guy).

I didn’t like his treatment of Sophy all the time. Most of the time it was fine, but even when he figured she was a virgin, he talked himself into seducing her anyway, because she wasn’t a lady. She’s a dressmaker. Towards the end, his jealousy drove me nuts because of how he treated Sophy. But that being said, Sophy would never really explain anything to him, so it was hard for him to know that she really did know what she was doing.

Also, it started with trying to figure out what to do about their rival dressmaker, yet I never felt that was resolved. My guess is that it will be in the next book, but I would have preferred a hint at that, rather than it just being left as is.

On the whole, I was extremely impressed with Ms. Chase’s writing, I mean wow! Is she good! But the plot was too convoluted and the beginning was slightly confusing. I think if you’ve read Silk is for Seduction, you won’t be confused and you may enjoy it more.

Cover Reveal of Caressed by a Crimson Moon

Author Amanda J. Greene's third book in her Rulers of Darkness series has a cover.  A GORGEOUS cover, if I say so myself. Caressed by a Crimson Moon, is Hadrian and Eva's book.

For those not familiar with the Rulers of Darkness series, it's Historical Paranormal Romance, and full of sexy, broody vampires. Caressed by Moonlight and Caressed by the Night are both available now, but you'll have to wait just a wee bit longer for Caressed by a Crimson Moon which is coming this Winter .

You don't have to wait for the cover, though, so without further ado...

The cover is so fabulous I have to share with all of you...

"Consumed by madness and tormented by dark memories of blood and death, Hadrian Lucretius, King of the Validus Clan, has returned after living in self-imposed exile for nearly three hundred and fifty years.
To maintain peace with the vampires, Eva Maldonado is offered as a sacrifice to the crazed vampire king by her father, the alpha of the Silveria Shifter Pack. Hadrian’s reputation is both legendary and lethal; he is ruthless, bloodthirsty, lusty, and soulless. When Eva arrives at the ancient fortress high in the Carpathian Mountains, she is shocked to find a ravaged man with dark burning eyes filled with loneliness and dangerous desire.
Would she be his lover…or his prey? His savior…or his victim? Would Hadrian lure her into madness or would their perilous passion be their redemption?"

Angel Betrayed by Cynthia Eden

Angel Betrayed (The Fallen, #2)Angel Betrayed by Cynthia Eden
My rating: 5 of 5 flames

With sexy Fallen Angels, and a sultry half-succubus, the pages steam from page one.

This is one of those novels that stuck with me long after I read it. I kept having daydreams about my own Fallen Angel, because, wow, Sammael is one sexy hero. The shadowy image of his black wings is such a nice touch. He’s a Fallen, and he’s one of those bad boys who doesn’t care about anything. But when Seline dances into his life, he realizes that it kind of sucks not caring about anything. Especially once he realizes he cares about Seline.

Seline is setting Sam up, big time. I love betrayal plots, and I love watching the hero/heroine try to get around that to have a relationship. This betrayal was early on so they had plenty of page time to fall in love and deal with Seline trying to kill him. Also, maybe she wasn’t going to kill him. She’s tricky like that.

Seline is a half-succubus, and the father-figure in her life is a Punishment Angel. He’s not a Fallen, since he still has his wings, but he’s not as favored as he thinks. He uses Seline to get him close to his mark, then he…delivers justice. One thing though, is he keeps telling Seline that she is an abomination, and he feeds her a lot of misinformation, so we get to see Seline learning and making her own judgment. I liked seeing her change her opinion on certain things because it made her a fantastic heroine. She wasn’t needy, or whiny, or TSTL. She was easy to like, and you wanted to root for her.

Sam was an Angel of Death, and his touch can kill, yet it never hurts Seline. Why is that? Is there more to her than just her succubus side? And what exactly is her other half? There is quite the twist towards the end that really had me thinking there might be a different ending. I love when an author can mislead me without making me feel like the ending came out of left field.

Cynthia Eden is one of my favorite authors, I especially love that her romantic suspense is actually paranormal romantic suspense. You can’t beat that!

Ms. Eden has a way of sucking you into her story and keeping you breathless until the ride is over.

Resounding Echo by Michelle Louring

Hey guys! I'd like to introduce you to our new part-time reviewer the Shadow Queen.  Without further ado, her first review for Demon Lover's!
Resounding Echo

Selissa is a normal human woman cursed with amenisia, stuck in an temple. Her only friend is a priest who doesn't mind that she is a little bit different than everyone else, she is covered by a tatoo on her back that noone can explain.
Selissa tries to find out anything about her life before she arrived at the temple.  One day when a group of refugees shows up looking for sanctuary, another stranger arrives who seems to know something about her.
A young apprentice was murdered in the ceremony hall, which the stranger informs Selissa that she is the reason why it happened, that its a warning.   He informs her that she needs to leave the temple that "they" are after her. That they either need her or she is threat to them.  She can make the first move or she can wait for them to find her.
So she leaves the temple with this stranger to find out about herself.
She finds out that the "they" are a clan of demon worshippers called the Deimos who are trying to release the demon lord Azarial and that the archangels are the ones that imprisoned him.
The book recieved a 4 out of 5 stars for me due to it being a little slow to start.  But once it did get started there was enough action and a budding romance  to keep me interested in the story. I will definately be reading the next book to find out what happens to Selissa.

"He sat up. They were in his bed, the moonlight shimmering through the curtains, striping the room in light and shadow. But he could see her clearly, her naked body kneeling next to his, her long hair like a veil around her shoulders, flowing over the curve of her breasts.

He was still pulsing with his orgasm, his cock thrumming, his body hot. And she was really there. In his bed, wiping her lips with the back of her hand.

He was shaking. What the hell had just happened? What had he let happen?

“Angel. What’s going on? What are you doing here?”

“I’m here to make you happy. To show you there is no reason to deny your desires. Or mine. Have I not made you happy? Your body is happy. But I still need you, Declan. I need you to touch me.”

“Jesus, Angel. I can’t believe this.”

“I’m real. I’m a woman, Declan, not a child. And I want you.”

She took his hand, and before he knew what she was going to do, she held his palm to her breast.

Jesus. Her flesh was warm, her nipple going hard beneath his fingers. He couldn’t force himself to pull away for a moment. When he finally tried to, she held on tighter.

“Please, Declan. Please don’t send me away again. I need you. And you need me. You cannot tell me you don’t.”

It was nearly impossible to think, his brain still half-dazed from coming. But he had to say something. Had to do something.

“Angel, this is not right. I can’t do this. We can’t do this.”

“We already have, Declan. And it was beautiful, as I knew it would be.”

He swore he could feel her pulse beating in the full flesh of her breast as she leaned into his touch.

“I’m here for you. For you, Declan. This is where I am supposed to be. You can’t tell me this is wrong. I won’t believe it. I love you, Declan.”

Jesus. Why did hearing her say that to him make his heart pound right out of his chest? His mind was going a hundred miles an hour. “You don’t know what you’re saying, Angel.”

“You cannot deny you feel something for me.”

He couldn’t.

God damn it.

“Of course I do! But this is...I don’t know anymore.”

“Feel this, Declan.” She held his hand closer, crushing her breast beneath their twined fingers. “Feel how my body heats for you. Feel my desire.”

She moved his hand down, over the soft cushion of her stomach. Lower still, in between her thighs. He was helpless to stop her. And when she slipped his fingers into her sweet, wet cleft, he was paralyzed.

“Ah, God...”

She sighed quietly, her breath coming out in a warm puff of air that grazed his cheek like a kiss.

“You are the first man to touch me, Declan. And it is better than anything I could have imagined. Your hand feels so different than mine. Larger. Stronger. And yours.”

She held him there, pressed against her mound. His heart was beating wildly. Totally out of control. He was out of control. Fucking helpless.

“I need you,” she said again. “I need you to touch me, Declan. I need you to quench this thirst. I feel as if I’ll die of it.”

Holding onto his hand with both of hers now, she slid it back and forth, over her cleft. Her flesh was soaking wet, slippery. And all he wanted was to touch her, taste her. Have her.

He knew in his head it was wrong. But his body felt right.

He couldn’t resist any longer. He could not do it.

“Declan, please have me. I will beg you until you do.”

Her hips were undulating against his hand, and he moved then of his own accord, sliding his fingers into her wet heat.

“Oh...” Her voice came out on a soft, whispered sigh.

“Angel.” His voice was gruff, thick with desire in his own ears.

“I want you.”

“Yes, Declan. Now.”

"One hot man is good. Two’s double the fun…until your heart gets involved. Jessie has been in love with her bisexual best friend, Paul, since their college days. He’s never made a move on her, though, and at this point she values his friendship too much to risk revealing her feelings. Especially since now he has a new male lover and seems so happy. Paul and Noah have only Jessie’s rest and relaxation in mind when they invite her along on a camping trip to Lake Tahoe. She’s been pretty stressed out preparing to show her art at a major New York gallery. A weekend getaway will do her a world of good—and they won’t take no for an answer. Jesse thought she’d be nothing more than a third wheel on this trip. But Noah is as sweet and hot as Paul, and their first night turns into a heated tangle of bodies in the dark tent by the lake. It’s an erotic, intense experience that must come to an end. And when it does, will she still have her best friend?"

Bound by the Night by Cynthia Eden

Bound by the Night (Bound, #4)Bound by the Night by Cynthia Eden
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I think by now it's no secret that I love Cynthia Eden's writing. This Bound series is no exception. It always amazes me how she can pack so much action and steamy goodness into such a short story.

Here we have a werewolf alpha named Jamie who is going to awaken the Blood Queen (a vampire queen who has been under a sleeping spell for years). He thinks that he will use her and bind her to him and that will be that.

Iona wakes from a 15 year long "sleep" and her world is turned upside down. She had been betrayed and imprisoned in sleep, but she doesn't know the half of it.

The two of them find out they kinda sorta like each other and they both want to defeat a common enemy, but...(isn't there always a but?) Iona sleeps and dreams Jamie's memories from his blood. He is by now in love with her, and he knows what she'll dream-His planning on betraying her. But she doesn't know he's changed his plans. Iona feels she can't stay with him, and Jamie does something very painful and very romantic. I loved it.

This is the fourth in the Bound series, and I'm hoping there will be more.

The Siren by Tiffany Reisz

My Rating:  5 out of 5 (and more if I could)

Ladies (and gentleman) after you inevitably give in and read the Fifty Shades Trilogy because, like me, you are a glutton for punishment, cleanse your palette with a REAL mainstream erotica novel (and one that is actually well written).  Really one of the best fictional novels on BDSM I've read in a while.  And excitedly part of a trilogy.

Nora Sutherlin is an author of erotica romance who is hoping to land a publishing deal with a big name publishing firm, thus launching her career to the next level.  She is assigned to Zach Easton, a man who's life is falling apart and has no time to cater to a gutter trash writer.  Yet, something about Nora's tenacity - and enticing beauty - causes Zach to give her a chance.  He'll sign her contract and allow the new book to be published if she makes all the changes he asks and does as he says.  Once the last word is done, if Zach feels the novel worthy he'll give her the chance.  Nora is up for the challenge in more ways than one.  Of course what Zach doesn't know is that outside of an erotica author, Nora is one of NYC's best Dominatrix's.  She gained her talent after being the sub for the Dom in NYC.   How will this all play out?

The few things I disliked: The fact that Nora and Zach actually wind up getting physical with each other.  I get it as part of the plot, it's not out of the realm of believability, but sometimes it is nice to have a man and woman with that kind of sexual tension still recognize that a fling would just be that and their friendship could be so much more.  The way Zach's estranged wife comes back and that culmination is just…flat.  Lastly her return to her former Dom is a bit of a let down.  In some ways, to me at least, it reads like she let life beat her in a way.  However some may argue she just realized who she really is.  I don't know…something was just off about it.

*********************END OF SPOILERS***********************
What's great about this novel is that not everything ends happily.  Some relationships are strained if not destroyed all together and that realism is a nice change of pace.  The author does a great job of being objective to her subject by having a range of characters with varying views on the "lifestyle" while never getting too preachy or depraved.  It's all handled well and realistically.  In my most humble opinion.   And there is some flavor of sex that will appeal to everyone's palette.  Yum, yum.

However, as Nora points out to Zach, Erotica is not a Romance it's a Horror novel and she is correct.  Erotica is not meant to leave you feeling warm and fuzzy, it's meant to leave you slightly disturbed.  The best Horror novels are one's that make you examine yourself and your morals, real Erotica works the same way and this novel does a tremendous job of giving you the differing levels of sexuality to explore and know when you've reached that moment you're past, not just your comfort zone, but your human code as well.

The Siren is going to be the standard against which I measure all mainstream Erotica moving forward.

No Longer A Gentleman by Mary Jo Putney

No Longer a Gentleman (Lost Lords, #4)No Longer a Gentleman by Mary Jo Putney
My rating: 3.5 of 5 flames

This book has so many things to like about it, but for some reason I really couldn’t get into it. I wanted to rate it higher, I truly did. But I just...can’t.

I don’t normally do reviews in the like/dislike format, but I really have had a hard time reviewing this book. Because it didn’t work for me, but I can see the marketability of this book, I think this format works.

I’ll start with the things I liked:

-The heroine is a spy, and a really great master of disguise
-The book mostly takes place in France during the Napoleonic War
-The hero is imprisoned in a dungeon for 10 excruciatingly long years
-His PTSD is never glossed over, he’s not miraculously “normal” once rescued
-The heroine rescues the hero
-The hero is attracted to the heroine while she’s in disguise, so he really is attracted to her personality and wit
-The book is well-written

What I didn’t like:

-The first 8 chapters or so are done in a back and forth format (10 yrs ago, present time, ten years ago, present time. etc)
-I couldn’t get into the heroine’s character
-There was a bit of predictability to it
-The heroine never could see her beauty, but in one scene she admits she that with her looks, she looks like a man’s high price mistress
-It took Cassie way too long to even consider the prospect of marrying Grey
-The ending was too tidy

Basically Grey, the golden child and heir to an earldom, is playing at being a spy in France. He sees a married woman who is known for her indiscretions, and he thinks to seduce information about her husband from her. Her husband finds them in bed together and imprisons Grey. In his private dungeon. For ten long years.

Cassie was minor English/French nobility, her family was killed during the beginning of the Revolution whilst in France, and she was the only remaining member. She became a spy, and worked her butt off to get rid of Napoleon. Cassie became a master of disguise and espionage. When she has a chance to help her boss Kirkland find information on his friend Grey, whom everyone has assumed dead, she heads off to France. What she finds is Grey is alive and she is able to free both him, and his only companion a priest.

I think that while this book wasn’t for me, that many readers will enjoy it. You have all this action, all this emotion and tension, and then for a short bit, we see Grey trying to readjust to society. Then a bit more espionage and action. I think Grey was a great character. His imprisonment forever changed him, he didn’t miraculously hit English soil and become normal. He had panic attacks, he had issues with too many people and close spaces. He had a violent temper. Cassie helped him, she was stable, and he liked her. His like blossomed to love, but she couldn’t accept it. Not just for the whole “I’m a spy, you’re going to be an earl” bit, but because she genuinely felt it was just that she was the first woman he’d been with in a decade.

I think this is where I began to have issues with Cassie. She was so intelligent and cunning, yet she couldn’t believe that he would ever want her. She’s damaged goods. But so was he. And I feel like his pain and angst was forefront, and hers was glossed over. She quickly and easily was able to leave the spy game and jump into her future, no problem. The ending was sweet, but predictable, as was the use of the bad guy and his plot.

Again, this didn’t work for me, but I can see many other readers enjoying it. And there were a lot of great points to this book.

Because of You by Jessica Scott

Because of You (Coming Home #1)Because of You by Jessica Scott
My rating: 4 of 5 flames

I don’t typically read contemporary romance or military romance (former SEALs etc), for a few reasons. The number one reason is that I tend to not want anything similar to my own life. I love werewolves, Dukes, vampires, and Highlanders, you get the picture. Military contemps tend to hit a little too close to home for me, so I usually avoid them like the plague. The last thing I want to read about is a woman dealing with her man when he comes back from the Desert.

But when I saw some of the high ratings given to this one by my friends, I had to take a chance.

I had a really hard time putting this one down, and while it has a slow-build romance, the whole story is so much more than just a romance. The writing in this story is fabulous. I think having two flawed characters meet before one was flawed is what helped this one become so much more intense and believable.

The heroine Jen went through chemo a couple years ago, and had a mastectomy. Her bff Laura is dragging her out w/her since it’s been close to 2 years since Jen went out. Also, it’s Jen’s first night wearing a falsie. She fidgets with her blouse and can’t get used to looking normal again. But her scar burns to remind her that while she may look normal, she isn’t “whole” anymore.

Shane is babysitting his platoon on their last night Stateside, when he accidentally bumps into Jen, one of the wives’ friend. He and Jen hit it off, they have a “moment,” and then they say goodbye, knowing that "moment" will be all they have. (meanwhile, their friends Laura and Trent bailed intentionally trying to give these two the push they need).

***Possible Spoiler***

The war-time action felt realistic, and was very easy to visualize. The injuries that occur are the kind too many of our troops are coming home with. And our hero comes home near death. [FYI I don't consider that a spoiler because half the book and most of the romance is dedicated to how he and the heroine interact after his injury] Jen’s a nurse and she and Shane will be seeing a lot of each other during his recovery and rehab.

I think what amazed me about this story is the way it was written-starting 5 years before, yet making it still feel real, and believable. I agonized over Laura and Trent’s relationship, and I waited on pins and needles for Vic and Nikki to come to terms with his loss.

This book did feel very real to me and it did hit close to home. The only thing I actually didn’t like was how Trent and Laura’s relationship was left hanging. Maybe because I was Laura for a while, maybe because my husband didn’t/couldn't talk to me for months while he was in Baghdad, or maybe because I just don’t like not having resolution, but for whatever reason, I hope they get a book, because their business was nowhere near complete.

I absolutely suggest this to all who want a well-written and realistic romance.

***Thank you to the author for the review copy

I've spoken with the author, and Ms. Scott says Laura and Trent do have a book coming out in 2013 called Back to You.
