Offside by Juliana Stone

Offside (The Barker Triplets, #1)Offside by Juliana Stone
My rating: 4.5 of 5 flames

I loved this book. Want to know a little known fact about your Highland Hussy? I played hockey for my university team, on a men’s team (we had no women’s team, so there were 4 of us girls), and I played in House Leagues. Those leagues are super competitive. Not that college hockey isn’t, but it’s a different vibe, so to speak.

In Offside, we see Billie Jo being pushed out of her pro league team in Sweden due to injury and coming home to her small town of New Waterford where hockey is god.

Billie has played with these guys her whole life, she’s played pro, you’d think they’d welcome her into their “Friday Night beer league” with open arms and a bunch of “Hell Yeahs!” but realistically, it’s not like that. It’s a men’s league, and they don’t want no wimmenfolk on the ice.

I brought about my own experiences to just lend a bit of credence to the book. Billie is treated abominably. Her car is keyed, her tires slashed, she’s roughed up a lot, and she’s got to deal with jackwagons giving her crap all over town. Not just on the ice. (I had my cute little Neon keyed, sprayed with silly string, shrink wrapped with layers of shaving cream in between each layer. And how did they get the shrink wrap under my car and around the top? Seriously) And this is just what I remember.

The man she’s been in love with since she was a kid is there, and she’s no longer a kid. The only problem in getting close to Logan is that he slept with her sister Betty Jo since high school. Oh, and she’s a triplet, so the fact that she looks exactly like Betty doesn’t make her feel any better. Does Logan want Billie for Billie? Or is he still lusting after Betty, but taking Billie as a substitute?

But they do get close, and they have some pretty steamy times, add to that another Barker sister, Bobbi Jo (whose story I soo can’t wait for), and there’s a lot going on in this small town.

I loved the hockey aspect, and I think that the steamy scenes would make the ice melt.I loved watching Logan fight his love for Billie, and I loved watching Billie try to distance herself from Logan (which obviously didn't work! lol). But how can they fall in love when each has a big secret that could ruin it?

Their secrets are not on par with "The Big Misunderstanding" we so often get in contemporaries. Oh no. This is much more intense, and so much BIGGER. when those bombs are dropped, the whole book became so tense my heart was pounding! But then it was cleared up. It was a bit too fast for me. I think they had a whole lot of drama and I felt cheated at not seeing that play out.

But that notwithstanding, this is still the best contemporary romance I’ve read in a long time. Juliana Stone’s writing is always good, and this lady can write an intense plot! If you want a steamy, sexy contemporary romance, this is for you!

Hollowland by Amanda Hocking

My rating: 4 of 5 Flames

Nineteen year old Remy King and her eight year old brother Max have been living at a quarantine, both have been separated; Remy placed with a roomful of other girls & Max in the medical wing. The quarantine is attacked by zombies, Remy escapes; and another girl named Harlow decides to tag along. Remy searches for Max, but her brother was already evacuated out first with the medical staff. Remy will stop at nothing to find him.

Throughout the book, Remy shows incredible strength and kick-ass zombie killing skills. She heads north to where she thinks another quarantine is and she assumes her brother was taken. During this journey she saves a lion, runs into a doctor named Blue and a former bass player/Rock Star named Lazlo. Remy is a strong, confident character with a will to keep it all together even though she's lost so much. She is determined to find her brother and protect him above all. The relationship that forms between Remy and Lazlo is a strange one; each one pushing the other's buttons. Harlow from the quarantine recognizes Lazlo and immediately has a crush on him, though that interest is not returned. He only has eyes for Remy.

So much happens in this first book, I was hooked! All I can say is that I was riveted by the pure unadulterated zombie beat-downs and action packed moments. Hocking keeps you glued to the story.

Riveted by Meljean Brook

Riveted (Iron Seas, #3)Riveted by Meljean Brook
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The world-building in this series is so vivid and descriptive, without being flowery, and all I could think of was This is what Steampunk should be. The world-building alone makes this a 5 star book, but when you factor in the characters and the originality, it makes me wish I could rate this book higher.

There are so many threads to the plot at work and they’re very subtle at first. Each strand leads you a different direction at first, but ultimately they twist together and tie the characters and the plot together nicely.

Annika is from a hidden village in Iceland, and the village elders plan on keeping it hidden. But one of those plot threads leads outsiders near her home. The village might not stay hidden for much longer.

Annika meanwhile is an engineer aboard an airship, and one of those threads leads her in search of her sister Källa who was exiled for something Annika did. The next thread is David Kentewess and he tangles up the strands quite nicely. He and Annika have an interesting road to their relationship and it’s so unbelievably sweet.

A few plot threads you really don’t see coming are the villain of the piece (I won’t mention his name as it’s still a new book), and when Annika finally does find her sister, you will never believe where she’s been.

Annika’s village is so well-done. I can’t tell you what it is that I love about it, but it’s a beautiful approach to a controversial topic. Meljean Brook is an amazing writer, she weaves all of those seemingly insignificant plot threads into significance.

It’s a fantastic story.

I’m leaving this review short and sweet for a couple reasons. 1) I’ve written it and re-written it several times and I just don’t feel I’m doing justice to it, and 2) A lot happens in this story. While the romance is slow-paced, it is the driving action of the story. Without this romance, those plot threads just don’t weave together properly. I feel like if I give too much away, it could ruin the book for you.

So, final verdict: While this is book 3 in the Iron Seas series, it is also a stand-alone. However, I would suggest reading Meljean’s FAQ page about the world. It will help fill in blanks.

Seduced by a Pirate by Eloisa James

Seduced by a Pirate (Fairy Tales, #4.5)Seduced by a Pirate by Eloisa James
My rating: 4 of 5 flames

***Some Spoilers-Ye be warned***

Don’t laugh, but I read this book because it’s International Talk Like a Pirate Day, and I felt the day wasn’t complete without a Pirate Romance.

Quick summary. Phoebe and Griffin are married as soon as Griffin is old enough. So he’s 17, but she’s 20. He’s slightly intimidated by the gorgeous siren he has for a wife and can’t do the deed *wink wink*

His solution is to run off and get drunk. Sadly, he’s scrawny and drunk and can’t defend himself when some horrible men kidnap him into slavery aboard a pirate ship. Thus begins his life as a pirate.

14 years later he comes home and he can’t wait to meet his darling wife Poppy (after whom he’s named his ships, and even gotten a blue poppy tattooed beneath his eye). He is nervous she’ll be upset he’s home, but he truly is excited to see her again. But he isn’t greeted by his wife. He’s greeted by a 5 year old boy who says his mama is outside. Umm, say what? He’d never thought she’d be as unfaithful to their wedding vows as he was.

But their first meeting is actually quite fun. She is still thinking of the short scrawny boy she’d married, not the large, broad-shouldered man sitting before her. She doesn’t recognize him. It doesn’t help he keeps calling her Poppy, because it’s not her name! I about died laughing when he realized he had her name wrong all these years.

Their romance was sweet, but everything was very fast. I loved the hero. Griffin was absolutely wonderful even when he thought something that wasn’t true. I think Phoebe went from trying to annul their marriage to wanting to seduce him way too quickly. I think the I Love Yous were also a wee bit too quick, but I did like the side plot with Griffin’s father quite a bit.

***Spoilers ahead, mateys***

My biggest complaint is that for a novella to deal with an absentee husband of 14 years, I do understand you have to gloss over the 14 years at sea, but it was hardly mentioned. I’d not be so forgiving. And while I liked the adopted children, I really wish that the heroine hadn’t been a virgin and that she had taken a lover. Not just because he did, but because it would have been a nice change. But instead she’s a 34 year old married virgin.

This story has the trademark Eloisa James witty banter and likeable characters, and I recommend it for when you’re in the mood for something sweet and sexy. Just be prepared to ignore the husband’s past 14 years, the heroine apparently is.

Unlocked by Courtney Milan

Unlocked (Turner, #1.5)Unlocked by Courtney Milan
My rating: 5 of 5 flames

I first heard about this book on twitter. Jane Litte (yes, THE Jane, the one from Dear Author) was saying how wonderful it was. And as I hustled over to to buy it, Jane did the coolest thing ever-she bought 20 copies of the ebook and gifted it to the first 20 responders from twitter. I was lucky enough to be one of those 20.

That being said, Courtney Milan is a new author to me. With the cruel actions of the hero, I honestly thought he'd be hard to like, but Courtney Milan made a believer out of me rather quickly.

The hero, Evan, was a jerk to the heroine, Elaine, during her coming out. He was the typical little boy who pulled the pigtails of the pretty girl he liked. But with him being 19, and Elaine being 17, he was much crueler than just tugging her hair. By page 13 I had tears in my eyes for what had happened to Elaine. Lady Elaine is gorgeous. But, Elaine has a loud laugh. The kind of laugh that reminds me of Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. Loud, vivacious, and maybe even a snort. Evan began with the laugh. And it spiraled out of control from there. She was taunted and made fun of by everyone. Everyone. She gradually withdrew into herself. And ten years later, when Evan returns from mountaineering on the Continent, he tries to apologize. Watching him gain her trust, watching him teach her to hold her head high, watching her shed the wallflower label with the grace of a ballerina, it was beautiful.

This novella will not be my last by her. I've already checked out her backlist and will be purchasing in a bit.

Anyone who loves a good wallflower romance will love this one.

Anyone who loves to see the hero humbled by love, will want to read this.

Anyone who wants a book that runs the gamut of emotions, will enjoy this book.

And anyone who loves romance will love this book.

How can you not?

Giveaway of Incarnation by Emma Cornwall

Gallery Books is offering a US only Giveaway of this Steampunk Incarnation. Just enter by leaving a comment with your email address. Contest will run for 1 week.

I must admit I was mainly drawn to this one by the cover. I wasn’t sure what to expect though, since it looks YA. It isn’t, not at all. I’d classify this one as a Steampunk UF. The beginning catches you up immediately, but it sort of slows down. I found the writing and the world captivating.

This is about the side character Lucy from the Bram Stoker novel Dracula. In this story, Mr. Stoker is used by the British government, among others, to hide Lucy’s death. But, surprisingly, she’s not dead. When she claws her way from the grave, her memory is sketchy, and she ranges from feral vampire to confused lady. Once the bigger part of her memory comes back to her, she finds the Stoker novel  in her father’s study and instantly seeks out the author. She wants to know why she was turned and who turned her into the monster she has become.

Lucy’s dual nature tends to be at the forefront of this story, although the nature of the plot is much deeper than just Lucy. Her vampire half is at war with her human half, and rather than just giving in to one side, she has to find a way for both parts of her to coexists. Her leftover humanity is what makes her so unique. Unique enough to attract attention from everyone.

All of the attention brings several matters to Lucy. She is very important in this new world, and she could bring about the destruction of her kind.

I don’t want to spoil the mystery, because that is the driving factor of this plot-the mystery of who sired Lucy, why isn’t he around, and what has happened to him?

There is a teeny bit of romance in this book, and once you find out more in depth about it, it’s really bittersweet. The only thing I wasn’t a huge fan of was the Steampunk was very light throughout the story. This story deals more with the government, the repercussions of machines replacing men and Big Brother watching all the time rather than showing gadgets and fun clockwork pieces. In fact I don’t think the vampires ever use a piece of machinery except for a steam coach at one point. If this becomes a series, I truly hope the Steampunk becomes just as predominant as the civil unrest.

Lucy's battle to keep her humanity parallels the political aspect in this Steampunk very well. Big brother is watching, even in her world. Compelling and intriguing, this Steampunk will catch your attention right off the bat.

Midnight Scandals by Courtney Milan, Carolyn Jewel, Sherry Thomas

Midnight ScandalsMidnight Scandals by Courtney Milan
My rating: 4 of 5 flames

I'm not reading the Sherry Thomas story...yet. But only because it looks to be part of a series, and from the reviews I've seen, I won't know what's going on. Once I've read the book before this, I'll come back to the ST story.

One Starlit Night by Carolyn Jewel-3 flames

The actual romance was beautiful and sweet, but I felt it ended a bit too abruptly. For a lovers reunited theme, I wanted more of them. I wanted more time dealing with their trauma, I wanted more of them together, and I wanted so much less page time for Eleanor.

Eleanor is Portia’s sister-in-law. Most of the changes she makes around the Grange are cosmetic, repainting a room, bringing in artwork from one room to a different room, digging up all the crocuses. Things of that nature. But what bothered me was how she got away with doing everything because no one wanted her feelings to be hurt.

I read another review where it put a different perspective on Eleanor (that she just wants bigger and better things for Portia-and she does, but it’s also for her husband Magnus), and I still just can’t get into her. I seem to be the only person who even mentions this, but I couldn’t stand her. I found her to be manipulative and over-bearing..

She wants Portia to have a Season in London. Portia has no desire to go to London, at all. She has a nice gentleman who will marry her, red hair, tarnished past and all. Yet Eleanor bats her baby blues and summons some tears and no one will tell her no. It’s very childish and manipulative.

As you can see, I haven’t spent much time on Portia and Crispin-that’s because way too many pages were dedicated to Eleanor.

I think it had the potential to be a 4 star story, even with Eleanor, but it was said every other paragraph that Eleanor gave that puppy look, and her eyes filled with tears. It drove me so crazy that I couldn’t enjoy the beautiful story.

What Happened at Midnight by Courtney Milan-4.5 flames

I really love how the 2 stories are tied together. From the slightest detail of a missing earring in Carolyn Jewel’s story, to the rowan tree still there, I love the concept of all 3 stories intertwining.

This story begins at the precise moment that Mary’s father’s business partners are ransacking her house looking for the money he embezzled. Mary is in the process of running away when one of the partners decides to beat the information out of her. Her fiancé John steps in, but he doesn’t stop her from leaving him. You see, he was one of her father’s business partners too.

Mary’s whole life changed from that moment on. She faces hardships that she should never have had to face. And she winds up in an unusual position. She is a lady’s companion, but the husband is over-protective of the two women.

When John ends up near the Grange 18 months later, everything is thrown into upheaval. And for the better.

I love Courtney Milan’s writing. The amount of emotion she is always able to evoke amazes me. The only thing I really didn’t like, is that once John admitted something to Mary, she was upset, but she took it in stride. Sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn’t. I wanted more from her. Her reaction was just too easy for my taste.

This was a wonderful story, though and I love who Mary became. I also love that John appreciated who she became. Milan writes such wonderful heroes.

Sherry Thomas-
I didn’t read this one, but I will. I just want to read the book before it first.

Highland Bride by Hannah Howell

Highland BrideHighland Bride by Hannah Howell
My rating: 3 of 5 flames

I have got to stop reading Hannah Howell books. I just don’t enjoy them. All too often I find the same story or plot device just in a different book. I think this is one of those authors I’m just going to have to part ways with.

For those of you who like Hannah Howell, this is one of her better heroines. I really liked Gilly, which is funny since I didn’t care for her in Highland Knight. Gilly has grown into a realistic and intelligent woman.

When approached by 3 different lairds whose lands bordered the small keep and land she was given, she outwitted them time and time again. BUT she also realistically knew that she was being given an option to choose her husband, which is far more than most women were allowed.
This is where my issues came into play. I didn’t really care for the hero. I did understand why he was the way he was, I just didn’t like it. All of his reasons really just made me like him less.

I think that the plot with Gilly and the mistress was a good idea, but I didn’t like how oblivious the men were. Which I know is part of the Hannah Howell sense of humor-men need a good woman and are completely clueless without one, but still... Not my cuppa.

I think I’ll just leave this at if you like Hannah Howell, you’ll like this one.

Walking on the Dark Side with Rachel Carrington

Walking on the Dark Side

Most, if not all, of my books include a villain. I enjoy writing him or her, creating the evil and making them as cruel as they can be. Sometimes, it’s difficult to keep turning up the dial on their misdeeds, but I’m constantly challenging myself. To me, a villain is necessary to offset the goodness of the hero and/or heroine, and the darker I write them, the better.

In The First Spell, the villain is a character no one suspects, someone who is close with the family, therefore making the reveal more shocking. Those are my favorite kind of characters. What is more delicious than showcasing a family that trusts one another, shares everything, only to discover one of the members has a dark heart?

To me, if you can read a book or watch a television show and truly despise the villain, the writers have done their job. That’s my ultimate goal, to be the mastermind behind an individual so vile he has no redeeming qualities. Some of the villains who come to mind are The Gravedigger in Bones (the woman was deliciously evil), the Mayor in the 3rd season of Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, Dahok in Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, and Lex Luthor in all the Superman adaptations.

What about you? Who are some of your favorite villains in books and on the television screen? What is it about those characters that really make you hate them?

Vampire Betrayed by Rachel Carrington

Vampire BetrayedVampire Betrayed by Rachel Carrington
My rating: 3 of 5 flamess

Hello sexy cover! Joaquin has done something he swore he’d never do-he fell in love. Ariana loves him too and they have a fantastic 3 months together. But Ariana has been getting emails from someone claiming to want to help her. Ariana is urged to ask Joaquin about himself, and lo and behold, he finally tells her thinking she can handle his secret.

Joaquin is a vampire.

Ariana feels betrayed that he’s been lying to her for so long, and wants nothing more than to get away.

But Charon, a very powerful ally (or enemy), finds her. And molds her into the perfect weapon against vampires. Then she turns her loose.

I had a hard time liking the heroine, but after sitting on it a while, I think I understand her a little better. She felt betrayed by her lover (Joaquin), and she reacted emotionally. Finding out her mentor was using her only added icing on the cake of betrayal.
I also liked how she wasn't ready to jump at the chance of going with Joaquin-she knew she needed time to sort through all of the major upheavals in her life---and there had been a couple of huge revelations in a short amount of time.

It was an interesting plot-I liked that aspect of it a lot. In fact, this is the first time I’ve seen such a take on the vampire/hunter relationship and I loved it. The heroine, it turns out, isn't fighting for the greater good, but rather for the bad guys. In essence, she is one of the bad guys, and has no idea. It's an excellent plot device that worked out well.

Anyone who wants a fast-paced and sexy vampire story will enjoy curling up with Rachel Carrington’s latest.

Sweet Ride by Bonnie Edwards

Sweet Ride!Sweet Ride! by Bonnie Edwards
My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars

This was originally titled This Heart of Mine but I kind of like the new title better (and the cover! I just love those red heels!) Sweet Ride was a fun and sweet Contemporary Romance with Bonnie Edwards’ typical humor sprinkled throughout. I think that anyone who loves category romance, or sweet romance with some spicy scenes will love this.

Katie is broken. Like really needs to be pieced back together and super glued broken. The good thing is that she knows this. The bad thing is that I don’t think we realize how bad it is til Jace does. Katie was brought up in foster care and she had a rough time of it, but she also became a very determined adult who pushed her way to the top of her game (selling used cars). She is very good at her job and has helped her boss, Harry, out to the point where he depends on her quite a bit.

Then Harry has a heart attack and Katie feels the pressure. Oh not of running the business, she could do that in her sleep. She feels the pressure of having a friend. She’s always run before she got too close to someone. Even the foster parents who she liked, she’d ask her social worker to put her back in the system. Her flawed thinking is that everyone will leave you, everyone will disappoint you, so leave before you love them, then you won’t ever have to feel a broken heart.

But then Harry has a heart attack. It turns out Katie really likes Harry. Then Harry invites his nephew to stay for a while too. It turns out Katie really likes Jace. She could really love him, if she gave herself the chance.

For Jace’s part, he’s halfway in love with Katie from the first second he sees her struggling to get a box out of her car. But in all their time together, he never really gets to know what makes Katie tick. He thinks he’s helping to make things easier on her, but really he’s taking her choices from her. Even down to selling his uncle’s car dealership out from under her. (You'll have to read it to find out what happens there! I won't spoil what happens)

This is a fun and sweet enemies to lovers story that I found quite entertaining and a great way to pass a rainy afternoon.

Seven Nights in a Rogue's Bed by Anna Campbell

Seven Nights in a Rogue's Bed (Sons of Sin, #1)Seven Nights in a Rogue's Bed by Anna Campbell
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is a tortured hero story at its best. He is scarred, both inside and out, and Sidonie proves to both of him that he’s not quite the beast he thinks he is. This was a retelling of Beauty and the Beast, and I found it to be just wonderful.

Sidonie arrives at Castle Craven in her sister’s place, to honor a bargain made with a man with no honor. From all her sister has told her, she will be facing the devil himself. From all her sister’s husband has ranted and raved, he looks like the devil as well.

Jonas was born to privilege, and he was titled, until someone dragged his mother’s name through the gutters and proved that his Spanish mother was never wed to his father. His bastard status lost the entailment, going to his cousin, who lorded it over him at every chance he got. But Jonas got to keep the money, only the title went to his cousin. Jonas made it his mission in life to become richer than anyone. But his scarred face didn’t cover a heart of gold. Quite the opposite, in fact.

Sidonie’s sister gambles well above her means, and she owes Jonas a huge amount of money. In exchange for not telling her abusive husband (his cousin), she agrees to 7 nights in his bed-The ultimate revenge in Jonas’ book. Sidonie and Roberta realize her husband will literally kill her if he finds out, so Sidonie goes in Roberta’s place. Her virginity to excuse Roberta’s gambling debts.

The gothic feel and crumbling castle lead mirror the hero’s black heart and yet. . .is he really such a beast? Oh he plays it well, but he isn’t the devil he was painted. Oh Jonas is no saint, but he and Sidonie strike a new bargain. He plans to seduce her in those 7 days, and if he fails she leaves virtue intact.

The romance was lovely, and the writing was beautiful. But Sidonie is hiding something. Something big. Jonas asks her to stay with him, to marry him, but she says she needs time. Everything changes once she returns home and Jonas is arrested for murder. Sidonie has proof to free him, but it means the fragile trust he had in her will be broken.

The last quarter of the book is heartbreaking. I was so frustrated with the characters, but they needed to work it out in their own time. And I loved how Beauty took her future with both hands and wouldn’t let go, no matter how beastly her Beast was.
