The Scandalous, Dissolute, No-Good Mr. Wright

The Scandalous, Dissolute, No-Good Mr. WrightThe Scandalous, Dissolute, No-Good Mr. Wright by Tessa Dare
My rating: 5 of 5 flames

What struck me the most about this story was the emotion. I think I went through every single emotion possible. This story takes place over several years. That’s right, years. Eliza did something rash as a 14 year old, and consequently was ruined. Her parents forbid her to have a Season until each of her sisters was married, so she wouldn’t have a chance to ruin their prospects.

When she meets Mr. Wright for the first time, she immediately discovers he is Mr. All-Wrong. But for some reason they can’t leave each other alone, and Eliza isn't "out." What is so sad about this one, is that once they realize they are in love, it isn’t possible for them to be together. The ending made me cry.

I think this is without a doubt Tessa Dare’s best work yet. Beautiful, emotional, and so wonderful, I recommend this book to any and everyone.

I am so sad because I’ve read all of her books. But what makes that so wonderful, is that now I can re-read them!

This is the same novella as in Three Weddings and a Murder (which I don't believe you can buy anymore) and this is an amazing story.

Moonlight & Mechanicals by Cindy Spencer Pape

Moonlight & Mechanicals (Gaslight Chronicles, #4)Moonlight & Mechanicals by Cindy Spencer Pape
My rating: 3 of 5 flames

I loved Cindy Spencer Pape’s Kilts & Kraken, so when I saw this one up at netgalley I jumped at the chance. The author has built a great Steampunk world, and I love seeing both the mechanical aspects and the political aspects of the plot.

If you’ve read Steam & Sorcery, you’ll see many familiar faces since we’re back with the Hadrian brood. One of those familiar faces is Inspector Liam McCullough (a werewolf). He helped rescue Wink from a vampire when she was younger, around the time the Hadrians adopted her. And ever since then, Wink has been desperately in love with Liam.

Wink is wonderful with machines, gadgets, anything mechanical. She has even designed a brass dog named George who acts as if he were a real dog. Wink has an affinity with machines, almost as if they talk to her. Even she sometimes feels as if George has grown from how she originally engineered him. This is important since Wink isn’t just a tinkerer, or holding down a job. She eats, sleeps, and breathes machinery.

While she may be in love with Liam, he treats her as if she were his sister. He even goes so far as to help Connor, one of the Knights of the Order, to woo her. He says forget flowers and chocolates, bring Wink a broken gadget as a gift. Compliment her intelligence rather than her beauty. And it’s painfully obvious that he’s in love with Wink. Yet he keeps pushing Connor at her.

Wink agrees to consider Connor’s suit, but in the mean time, there’s a mystery on their hands. Men, women, and animals, are all disappearing from London’s working class, stolen by a metal man. There also seems to be something planned for the Ascot races, and Liam is working both cases.

The whole case is getting more and more confusing and more and more twisted. When they finally think they know what is going on, something happens to muddle it even more. It's really an intriguing plot, and I wish there had been more time spent with the mystery plot, because at one point the romance started to drag a bit.

What I like is that there’s no real love triangle. Wink makes up her mind pretty quickly about Connor, and she knows that she’d rather be a spinster than a wife to someone she doesn’t feel passionate about. What annoyed me though, was Liam’s reluctance to be with Wink. I mean, I get his reasons (his dad was a horrible and abusive father/alpha to him), but it just felt like it dragged on for too long, and when his parental issues were resolved, it seemed like it was way too quick, I mean seriously, something that has shaped the way you see yourself and life and marriage isn’t going to go away after a dinner with your father.

This book’s strongest aspects are the strong world-building and the fun cast of characters, and I don’t think you need to have read the first 3 books to enjoy this one.

Angel in Chains by Cynthia Eden

Angel in Chains (The Fallen, #3)Angel in Chains by Cynthia Eden
My rating: 5 of 5 flames

***I would suggest reading the first 2 books. While you can read this as a stand-alone, Az's previous status as the enemy doesn't come across in this, so you might not get why he was so bad.

In the books Angel of Darkness and Angel Betrayed Azrael was the angel in Heaven who was in charge of all the Death Angels. He had the book, the one with the list of names of those who would die. He kept the balance, the order. And he made sure that when one of his angels screwed up and didn't take the soul he was meant to...well, Az made sure the Punishment Angels were sent out.

This is from Angel of Darkness and it tells a bit about Az:

Keenan jumped out of the truck. He raced for his old mentor. "Stay away from her!" He yelled.
Az didn't move. Not much had ever moved Asrael. Not pity. Not fear.
No emotion. Ever. He was the perfect Death Angel.

And then Az...fell. He didn't fall for a woman, or for a noble cause. Az fell because he was...bad.

In Angel Betrayed Az was newly fallen, confused, and still trying to get back into Heaven, to earn redemption, to figure out why he was no longer favored. And he did something noble. And he realized that maybe the angels didn't know everything.

In this book, he is just angry. And when he sees a woman being assaulted by some shifters, he's ready to kick ass. Not because it's the right thing to do, or because he is instantly in love, oh no, it's because he has rage and these jerks need to be taught that they aren't the scariest thing in the night. He is.

Once Az actually meets the woman, Jade, he realizes that she could be his ticket back into Heaven. Redemption and pearly gates here he comes! But he also finds out that saving this little human isn't going to be easy, and her enemy is just as strong as he is.

Jade is on the run from her psycho ex. He's a shifter and he wants Jade back. He is the alpha of the local panther pack, and he has killed anyone Jade dared to love. Her family, anyone who helped her, her boyfriends. Because Jade is his. It's time she accepted that.

"Brandt had acted as if he owned her. Az...acted as if he'd die without her."

Jade and Az aren't just fighting Brandt, though, they're fighting for Jade's life. Az already screwed up the balance he used to care so much for, by keeping Jade alive after Brandt's claws sliced through her. Now he has to make sure no other death angels come for her.

Az will have to use his brother Sam and any help Sam can give (which isn't much since Sam is still pissed at Az for centuries of trying to kill him).

Az find out that maybe his fallen brethren didn't fall because they were being punished, but just maybe, it's because they were favored.

Once, Sam had told him that angels weren't always pushed out of heaven because they'd done something wrong. Sometimes, they lost heaven as a reward. Because they were offered something...more. He saw that more in Jade's eyes.

This is a dark, sexy, suspenseful series, and no one does paranormal suspense better than Cynthia Eden.

The Iron Duke by Meljean Brook

The Iron Duke (Iron Seas, #1)The Iron Duke by Meljean Brook
My rating: 5 of 5 flames

This book amazed me. I was reading an anthology called Burning Up and in it was a story called Here There Be Monsters and wow, did that writing rock my socks! I was a bit confused on a few points, but was so wow'd by the world and the characters that I immediately read The Iron Duke.

The world-building is complex, and intricate, and really really interesting. I think that the characters were really well-done, and I loved their romance. There was one scene where my eyebrows shot up, but I think it worked, and it was necessary to show how real these characters are.

Which brings me to the characters, oh the characters. They were fantastic. Rhys and Mina are wonderful together, but the side characters were equally as wonderful and equally three dimensional. (I hate cardboard characters, and I guarantee you won't see any here).

I think for a world where an alternate history is involved, it's not a bad idea to look up Meljean Brook's website-she has a lot of extras and the actual history of the Mongols, and her new version of the Horde.

Check here for her Iron Seas Guide

I'm so excited for Heart of Steel to see what was so important for Archimedes Fox to try to take the Lady Corsair, that I paid $9.99 for the ebook. (For those of you who know me, you know I'm cheap and can't stand spending more than 7 or 8 bucks on the high end for an ebook).

I can't wait to dive back into this series.

What Happens at Christmas by Victoria Alexander

What Happens At ChristmasWhat Happens At Christmas by Victoria Alexander
My rating: 3 of 5 flames

I have come to look forward to Victoria Alexander’s Christmas novels. This year’s was just as fun and yet, I felt that it wasn’t quite as good as His Mistress by Christmas or My Wicked Little Lies (books 1 & 2 in Sinful Family Secrets series).

This one starts out with twin sisters Beryl and Camille talking about Camille’s ridiculous plot to ensure the man (a foreign prince) who’s courting her both has the perfect English Christmas and proposes to her as well. Their family is not quite “normal,” so since no one is in the country, Camille hires a troupe of actors to play her family.

Let the games begin!

The farce is off to a raring start when Camille’s new “sister” decides her part would be much better played if she were a tart. The lady who plays her mother can never remember her own name, let alone that of the part she’s playing. And while all of this drama is just getting started, Camille is hit with a blast from the past.

Gray has just blown back into Town under the impression his uncle, the man who raised him, is dying. Lo and behold his uncle is in great health. It was a trick his cousin played to get Gray to come home. Gray bailed 11 years ago and hadn’t come back once. The day before his long-time friend Camille was to get married, he walked in, declared his love out of the blue, and when Camille didn’t immediately declare her undying love right back, he left for America to make his fortune.

Camille is shocked to see Gray in her family’s country house, but since he won’t leave and decides to stay on through Christmas as her cousin, she’s stuck with him. And a house full of actors, her twin sister, and one foreign prince.

This book had the potential to have a ton of sexual tension, but I felt so much of it wasn’t there. Immediately we see that Camille and Gray are the love interests, but that leaves the third wheel, Nikolai the prince (who may or may not be who he seems). I felt this is why I couldn’t enjoy this story to the fullest. Nikolai is used as a plot device and nothing more. He is around when it’s convenient and he has a very small role. Which is sad because he’s the whole reason for the Christmas farce!

Gray and Camille finally have it out over what happened a decade ago, and I did enjoy that, but I really had a hard time feeling any deeper connection to the two main characters. I enjoyed Beryl and Lionel’s small scene better than any other (which if you’ve read the previous book, makes it all the sweeter).

Then the ending scenes began. At first when Camille’s real mother and real sister show up, I thought it was great. Her mother is quite a fun lady. But something happens with Camille’s father that really bugged me. The ending was way too easy, too tidy. I love a good Happily Ever After, don’t get me wrong, but this ending was incredibly convenient.

While I liked the book well enough, it wasn’t as fun and witty as her other books. The drama felt contrived and the Prince was used only when it was convenient, or when Camille needed to make Gray jealous. This was ridiculous since the whole point of the charade was to entice the prince to propose by Christmas. He was rarely around. If there's going to be a love triangle, for the love of all that's holy, actually use the characters!

Flirting With Rescue by Sidney Bristol

Flirting with RescueFlirting with Rescue by Sidney Bristol
My rating: 4 of 5 flames

Can I say a book is sassy? This book is sassy. I loved it.

This is the fun kind of novella that combines some of my favorite things. It's steamy, it has a hero who loves animals, and a saucy heroine who knows her own mind.

Like in this scene:

"Scott whispered something in Spanish she didn't quite catch. Most of the time she could puzzle it out, but not when her brain was focused on how to get him out of his pants."
I like a heroine who knows what she wants ;)

This starts out with Cody, a former barrel racer, who is coming to pick up some confiscated horses. When she meets the man who runs the shelter, a super sexy Cuban named Scott, the sparks start flying.

With some sick horses on his hands that he knows very little about, Scott calls in for help. He gets Cody, the granddaughter of the man who usually helps out. And he also can't get her off his mind.

There is more going on with these horses than they know, and with a dark car watching Cody's every move, they need to figure things out and fast. But is there room for a relationship when all that's between them are some horses?

What a fun, flirty, sweet and sassy book. I'm still smiling.

Halloween Heat V Menage Anthology

Halloween Heat V MenageHalloween Heat V Menage by Alyssa Turner
My rating: 3.5 of 5 flames

***This is an erotica anthology

This is a short anthology full of steamy stories that will leave you needing a cold shower;)

Thrills and Chills by Alyssa Turner-2 flames
Kind of a tease as far as the ménage goes-it sets it up. But what I didn’t like was that they were really young. Like just out of high school young. That’s just not my taste.

Deployment Gifts by Jennifer James WOW! -5 flames
This was about a girlfriend who wanted to set her sort of boyfriend up with a night to remember before a long deployment. She gets her good friend Jade to join them and it’s a hot, sexy and romantic story.

Phantom Pleasure by Eden Summers-4.5 flames
Here, a woman’s husband sets up a threesome for her, but he and the other man don’t let her know who’s who right off the bat. This was a sexy, steamy read that will leave you wanting an ice water.

Taking Candy by Vristen Pierce-4 flames
I did like this, even though it’s not my usual taste, but what I didn’t like was that right away Candy finds a guy and they go around a corner for a quickie, then she moves on. I think I would have liked it better if she hadn’t had Rico, he seemed unnecessary. I did think that is was short and sexy and will leave you hot and bothered.

Trick or Treat by Ana Maria Pasion-2 flames
Oh I didn’t like this one at all. It was two 18 year old boys peeping at a woman who leaves her window open. She catches them, of course, and brings them inside. This one is just dirty. I just am not a fan of teenagers and middle-aged women. If they had been older, I would have liked it more, or if the ending had been different. But the ending ruined it for me.

Sneaking a Peek by Eden Summers

Sneaking a Peek

Sneaking a Peek by Eden Summers
My rating: 4 of 5 flames

Well, that was hotter than I expected. I read this while waiting on the playground to pick up my daughter, and's a tip. Don't read it on the playground. I kept glancing around thinking people could tell why I kept uncrossing and crossing my legs. Goodness me, that was way too steamy to read without a drink, and way too steamy for the playground. O.o

So Tarney is just settling in to watch her hot fireman neighbor get ready to workout. She's got her wine, she's got a great chair on the porch that almost makes it look like she's watching the street rather than her neighbor, and then she gets a phone call.

Her friend calls and Tarney starts describing Ethan's workout to her. But she has to lean way too far back in her chair to catch glimpses to describe to her friend, and sure enough, she falls. Ethan comes to her rescue, and he doesn't plan on leaving any time soon.

The one thing that really surprised me with this story, though, was the humor. Author Eden Summers has a great gift for working humor into a scene without it feeling cheesy or forced.

I will definitely keep watching this author for new stories, and I recommend her for anyone wanting a good fireman erotic romance.

Shifter's Lady by Alyssa Day

My rating: 4.5 of 5 flames

Once upon a time, a girl who had never read paranormal romance discovered the Warriors of Poseidon series. This girl immediately had to read every book in the series, and with each book, her love for theses Atlantean warriors has grown.

Then she found an anthology that held this short story. And she let a friend borrow it. And she hasn't seen it since.

But today, Alyssa Day released the story as an ebook! The girl bought the novella. And there was much rejoicing.

In Shifter's Lady also found in the anthology Shifter, we have mateless alpha Ethan (from the other novella Wild Hearts in Atlantis) and we have Marie from Atlantis.

Someone or something is killing Ethan's pride, but he isn't sure what. He needs help, but will he accept it?

Marie is going to Florida to visit her brother Bastien, one of the Atlantean Warriors, and his new mate. She knows something is going to happen, but can't figure out what. Marie definitely didn't think she'd fall in love while topside.

Their romance is bittersweet, and I won't ruin the ending, but it's not what I expected. I would love to see Marie and Ethan more in the current books. But as of now, this is one series I started years ago as my first paranormal romance, and it's the only one I still read, that still feels fresh, and is easy to slip into each time I pick up a Warriors of Poseidon book.

I don't think you'd enjoy this novella as much if you haven't followed the series, but this is one series that has withstood the test of time for me. If you're looking for something other than just vampires and werewolves, why don't you try some Atlantean warriors?

My rating: 4.5 of 5 flamess

This is a very quiet book. What I mean by that, is that it’s very understated and doesn’t have a whole lot of action. And yet...for a book that doesn’t have a whole lot going on, this book has a whole lot going on! (bear with me, I know that doesn’t make sense). What I mean is that while there isn’t a lot of action, there are a lot of things happening. There’s an auction, there’s the romance, there’s a ball, there’s a backstabbing friend, a couple of men from London wreaking havoc on her new life, there are so many things happening, you don’t feel you've missed out on anything.

Evie is a recently widowed countess who has decided that for now, it’s best she retire to the country. The ton has made no bones about the fact that she isn’t welcome. In fact, because her husband was older, and died so quickly after she married, they think she did it (for the money, of course, which is ridiculous). Her late husband’s lands were all entailed, so she gets a tiny stipend every month, and a small cottage that he won in a card game. Sort of ironic seeing as he won Evie in a card game.

Eve was a courtesan, and once she married she truly hoped she could settle down and just enjoy her new life. But she finds herself exiled to the country, and praying they don’t know of her reputation there.
Adam Sylvaine is the vicar and the first time he sees Eve, he notices that she is asleep. During his sermon. No one ever falls asleep during his sermons. Not only is he graced with the looks of an angel, but his voice holds people rapt, women especially.

Eve feels so ridiculous for both falling asleep in church, and for the way she treated the vicar. (he startled her, and she jumped and shouted something rude), so she decides to invite him over. But of course, he sees right through her manipulations and just asks why she brought him here. Her answer shocked him. She wants friends. As simple as that, but also, not simple at all. The people of Pennyroyal green all think they know Eve and her reputation. But they only know what they’ve heard.

Adam and Eve’s (oh Lord I just got the significance of the names! How did I miss that?!) relationship is hard because if they do anything, he will be shunned, and his life that he truly enjoys as vicar will be over. For Eve’s part, she feels things towards Adam that she’s either never known, or never allowed herself to feel. There are a couple scenes that make you want to applaud Evie for handling them so well, and there are scenes that will break your heart.

I have to stop here, because I don’t want to give away the story and so many of its nuances, but please read this one. You will not regret it at all! It may be the 7th book in the series, but it works well as a stand-alone. I found myself held rapt to the pages, the writing and story riveted me.
