The Recruit (Highland Guard, #6)The Recruit by Monica McCarty

My rating: 4.5 of 5 flames

This is the 6th book in Monica McCarty’s Highland Guard series, and it’s an intense ride. This book, like the last, is extremely emotional, and extremely realistic.

At age 14 Mary is married to her knight in shining armor, the Earl of Atholl. It isn’t long before his armor starts to dull. Mary though, ever in love with him, tries her hardest to get him to love her. To Atholl, she was a child bride, and he never really stopped seeing her as a child. He was a champion, he was famous, he was a hero. His courtly ways entranced Mary from the get-to. But her childhood infatuation was crushed when she found out he wasn’t ever in her bed because he was in, well, pretty much every other woman’s bed.

And then he is branded a traitor and hanged, his head placed on a pike. Mary’s twin Janet comes and tries to take her back to Scotland, but that ends with disastrous results-Janet is swept away after a bridge explodes, and no one has seen or heard from her since. Mary is stranded in England, widow of a traitor, has to find a way to survive. And she does. And she does it in England to stay close to her son. She keeps her head down, she stays off the king’s radar, because the last thing she wants is another marriage, and she tries to make her own way. (all of this is before chapter 1!!!)

She’s doing alright, until she’s asked to go to Scotland and spy on the Bruce (her brother-in-law). This is where we see Mary start to come to life. She meets Kenneth and one of the hottest scenes I’ve ever read happens and I was entranced.

Mary is trying to forget Kenneth and go back to her normal life, while Kenneth is trying to become one of Bruce’s elite warriors and going through hell to prove himself.

And then they meet again.

Wow, the emotional toll this book took on me was insane. I felt both exhilarated and drained at the same time. The intensity of the war going on, that any minute Kenneth could be caught, of the secrets between them coming out...

You don’t want to miss this one.

The ending was wonderful. I loved it, I loved the way Kenneth and Mary came together, and I really really really loved the ending. An amazing story full of the rich history of the time, The Recruit is one of my favorite books of the year.

My Brave Highlander by Vonda Sinclair

My Brave HighlanderMy Brave Highlander by Vonda Sinclair
My rating: 4.5 of 5 stars

When I first picked this book up, I was surprised at how quickly it captured my attention and then I remembered that it’s a Vonda Sinclair book, and wanted to smack myself, because DUH! Of course it sucked me in, she’s a fantastic writer.

I think the intensity of this book is increased because it’s not just a simple love story, it’s not just a simple rescue, and well, to be honest, NOTHING is simple in this book.

Isobel has been dodging advances from her soon-to-be brother in law while her fiancé is away for a few weeks. It comes to the point where Isobel has to fight for her life, and after knocking the jerk out, she thinks she’s killed him. Not knowing her fiancé too well, she assumes she’ll be hanged for killing the brother of the laird, and she runs.

Dirk McKay is actually the heir to his clan, but he’s been in hiding and using the name MacLerie. Soon he’s pushed into going home, though, and he’s not sure that is a good thing. His stepmother tried to kill him so her sons could inherit. And while his father has recently died, the stepmother still holds sway over her sons.

The trek north is time enough for Isobel to know that she wants Dirk, whether it’s for one night or more, she wants him. But she doesn’t want to bring him trouble, either, so she asks to be sent home to her brother. Dirk finds he can’t let her go, but he doesn’t want to marry her, because as newly appointed laird of the McKay clan, he doesn’t want to start a feud over stealing another man’s bride. Yet he can’t keep from thinking about her, and the wee devil can’t keep her hands off him.

With one laird on the hunt for his wayward bride-to-be, and another laird looking for his sister, what can Dirk and Isobel do to stay together? And can they survive the many attacks on their lives?

I love this series, and Vonda Sinclair has a way of writing that catches you right from the beginning and doesn’t let go until well after it’s ended.

Poison Princess by Kresley Cole

Poison Princess (The Arcana Chronicles, #1)Poison Princess by Kresley Cole
My rating: 4 of 5 flames

I don’t usually read YA, but for Kresley Cole, I made an exception. Not only is she one of my all-time favorite authors, I love her rich world-building and swoon-worthy heroes. Her sense of humor is the icing on the cake!

Pay attention to the tarot cards.

I LOVE the idea of each major player in the series identifying with a tarot card. I love that it’s very much like those old Highlander TV show/movies from the 90s-the whole There Can be Only One type of theme where each major player knows that he or she will eventually have to kill one of the people they are with. I think the tarot idea is just so intriguing. I think that this book has bursts of brilliance, but I think that those flashes of brilliance were overshadowed by a weak male lead and at times vague world-building. I wanted to know more about the Flash, and how Evie survived.

Pay attention to the dates.

This series begins in first person pov by someone other than the heroine, and it’s AF (After the Flash) and it’s.. .intriguing. Very intriguing. Then we skip to BF (Before the Flash) with the heroine Evie and first pov from her.

I liked Evie, I know she’s bratty and spoiled, but she’s a teenager, so of course she’s bratty and spoiled. But you know what? Evie grows. She does not end that book the same girl who began it.

Pay attention to her hallucinations/dreams.

The foreshadowing in the dreams is well-done, and very typical Kresley Cole. If you are an IAD fan, I’d say that Evie almost reminds me of a younger Mariketa. The ending was fantastic, and I was very happy with it (I say this because I know others weren’t).

My biggest problem is that I had a really hard time with the male love interest (notice how I didn't call him the hero?). I wanted a typical strong male lead that Kresely Cole is known for, but I got a drunken teenager. This is realistic, I get it, but in a post-apocalyptic setting, I wanted a hero, or at least a partner for a kick-ass heroine. I love that Evie is well on her way to becoming that kick-ass heroine in this tarot themed “There Can Be Only One” world, but if Jack is going to be her love interest, I want him to do some growing up.

I will say that Cole's writing is fantastic and gripping, but her trademark sense of humor was missing from this book. I also really want to read the next book because I want to see how this plays out-I’m hoping that the second book will go deeper and delve further into this After the Flash world that Cole has set up.

Touch of a Scoundrel by Mia Marlowe

Touch of a Scoundrel (Touch of Seduction, #3)Touch of a Scoundrel by Mia Marlowe
My rating: 4 of 5 flames

The young Earl of Devonwood grew up seeing visions, a trait he gets from his mother’s side. He usually has about 12 hours until a vision comes to pass, and they always do. But that doesn’t stop him from trying to stop or change them. His father won’t listen to that kind of malarkey, even though Griffin has proven his visions time and time again.

So when Griffin as a young boy sees his father’s death, he does everything he can to prevent it. But his father doesn’t listen, and Griffin feels that since he has no control over what happens, that it’s pointless to try to warn anybody, or change anything.

Then he meets the intoxicating woman in his garden. And after the lovely vision of amazing sex with her that he has, he finds out she is his brother’s almost-fiancé. Uh, oops.

Emmaline is not engaged to Teddy. Yet. And since she and her father are con-artists, that’s probably a good thing. The visions that Griffin keeps getting of her only intrigue him more, but he’s also super skeptical of both Emmaline and her professor father. But if she’s a fortune hunter, why isn’t she engaged to his brother yet? And why isn’t she taking him up on his offer since he’s the earl? It doesn’t make sense to him.

When one of his visions comes true, everything changes. How can he fall for his brother’s woman without ruining both her and his relationship with his brother?

Meanwhile, there is something going on behind the scenes, and it’s not what I expected. Someone plans on stealing something from Emmaline and her father, but it’s so much more than that. The ending was a bit abrupt, but it was interesting, to say the least.

All in all, a good read, slightly different from your normal Regency, but in a good way. I really enjoyed the Mia Marlowe’s style and will absolutely continue on in the series.

My favorite quote:

“That violet gown is most becoming, Miss Farnsworth."

"Thank you milord." How should she return the compliment? you make my pantaloons twist, milord would be honest at least.

Mate Claimed by Jennifer Ashley

Mate Claimed (Shifters Unbound, #4)Mate Claimed by Jennifer Ashley

My rating: 5 of 5 flames

Ever since Wild Cat, I’ve wanted to read more about Las Vegas Shiftertown leader Eric.

With so many things going on in his Shiftertown, Eric has a lot on his plate. He has some wolves from a closed down Shiftertown in Northern Nevada moving in. The preparations are insane, the government is closing down the Shiftertown, but hasn’t prepared anything yet. Their insane logic? The shifters can just bunk up and bond. Right.

So now Eric has the leader Graham to deal with. Since he’s alpha of his wolves, the last thing he’d ever do is demote himself and allow a cat to lead his pack. Graham is an interesting character, and he’s quite the a-hole at the beginning.

One thing I need to remember is that Jennifer Ashley doesn’t always write her villains to be simply a bad guy. It’s never black and white with her. She has this cool grey area she finds where villain is truly in the eye of the beholder. Every now and then, someone who we think is a bad guy, well, isn’t. He might be heroic in his own way. Just something to keep in mind as you’re reading.

And Iona. Eric has to deal with Iona. She was stubborn and at times it was frustrating that she didn’t get how much she needed to be with other Shifters, but she was a good heroine (She was able to stare down an opposing alpha which was an awesome). The main problem with Iona is that her cat wants out. She thinks she’ll just keep controlling the shifter side of her, but she has no comprehension of what could happen if she doesn’t join in with a shifter town. An unmated female, in her prime, is an easy target for any male.

This is where Iona drove me nuts. Even though she’s half-human, even though she’s kept her shifter side under control for her twenty some-odd years, it doesn’t mean her cat is controlled. Human laws don’t apply to her Shifter side, and she doesn’t get that she could turn on her family and potentially hurt them. This is what Eric is trying to stress to her, and luckily it finally gets through to her, because at one point I was actually yelling at the book that she needed to get a clue! (I get involved with the characters-lol).

There is also way more going on in this book than just shifters needing to learn to live with each other, and Iona and Eric falling in love. There is a huge conspiracy going on and we meet an intriguing new character named Tiger. Tiger’s history is heartbreaking, and I really have to stop reading the excerpts because now I want his story even more!

This series is a favorite of mine, and with each installation Ms. Ashley continues to enthrall me and surprise me.

Hard Mated by Jennifer Ashley

Hard Mated (Shifters Unbound, #3.5)Hard Mated by Jennifer Ashley
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Know what I love about Jennifer Ashley's stories? No two heroes are alike. Spike is different than any other shifter yet.

Spike was Fergus' tracker (old leader of San Antonio Shiftertown, and all-around bad guy). He is Liam's tracker now, and this is his story.

Spike is thrust into role of father of an unruly 4 year old cub after the mother dies. The mother was a human shifter groupie who he’d had one night with, but it’s her friend Myka who wants to take custody of little Jordan. Spike is the Shifter Fight club champion and he’s an amazing Tracker. We find out that he may be more alpha than he’s letting on, which could pose hierarchy problems in the Austin Shiftertown. But what surprises Myka is that the hard-core fighter who looks like a thug, is incredibly gentle and protective of his new-found cub.

Myka has issues processing what she sees. Not just Spike himself, but the fact that he’s protective of Jordan, and he’s not going to hurt him. Her past issues come to play, but luckily we can trust Jennifer Ashley to never give us a TSTL heroine, so Myka learns. She understands that Spike isn’t who everyone thinks he is-A big brutish fighter. There’s so much more to him than anyone sees, and she tells them so.

When Spike’s job puts them in danger, he has to figure out how to be both a father and a tracker. Myka and Spike have a hard road, but it is so worth the reward.

I think that the idea of shifters as second-class citizens is horrid...and all-too realistic. This is one of my favorite series, and Jennifer Ashley rocked my socks with yet another Shifters Unbound story.

The Highlander's Reward by Eliza Knight

The Highlander's Reward (Stolen Bride, #1)The Highlander's Reward by Eliza Knight

My rating: 3.5 of 5 flames

I enjoyed it. It was a sweet romance (which was the best part of this story-a very romance-centered story) and it was plenty steamy for even this Highland Hussy.

This story starts out with English Lady Arabella on her way to Stirling in Scotland to be married to an English baron named Sir Stewart. But on the way some Scottish rebels attack her people. One of the barbarians sees her fighting for her life and plucks her from her horse to sit with him. Little does Arabella know that he is not a rebel. He has saved her from the rebels.

Laird Magnus Sutherland has just delivered his sister to her soon-to-be husband when he comes upon a lady being attacked by some of the rebels. But the men who are going after Arabella’s party aren’t going to discriminate that she’s not a warrior. She is English and that’s enough for them to hate her. Magnus swoops in and saves her, but he then sets things into motion he never would have thought of before.

Even one of his own men attacks Arabella because she’s English. Magnus’ solution is to marry her, that way she’ll have his protection and his men will be honor-bound to protect her as well. It doesn’t hurt that this way he won’t have to marry the neighboring clan chief’s bratty daughter (this will, by the way, come back later to bite him in the bum).

I think this was a very romance-centered book. This is good because you don’t see too much of that any more. I truly enjoyed Arabella learning that not all Scottish men are brutal barbarians, and I liked watching Magnus fall in love with his English wife. His fall was the best because at the beginning he couldn’t understand how any man could allow a woman to mean so much to him. Ya gotta love when those kinds of heroes fall in love.

I had a small temper tantrum with this book at one point where Arabella did something so dumb I wanted to throw my nook across the room. I settled for turning it off and grabbing a glass of wine ;)
After she realized how stupid it was of her, I went back to liking the book again. Oh, and the ending was cute. I really liked Arabella’s father, even though he didn’t get much page time, he was a good character.

I hope to read more by this author, and I really think anyone who wants a romantic medieval story will love this one.

A Season for Sin by Vicky Dreiling

A Season for SinA Season for Sin by Vicky Dreiling
My rating: 2.5 of 5 flamess

2 flames, maybe a 2.5

I'm really disappointed with this one.

First off, this is not a complete HEA-this is the beginning of a new series and the novella is more of a teaser, or an intro to the characters and the series.

(btw, that is not why I rated it a 2)

This one starts out pretty strong, with the hero intending on letting his mistress go, but she turns the tables on him and lets him go. Then he sort of wanders around feeling lonely, he sort of notices some young bucks, he meets some new friends, and he goes home. I really enjoyed the banter.

Ms. Dreiling’s best asset is the wit and wittiness of her characters.

What I didn’t care for was the heroine. She isn’t given much page time, and in a 60 page novella, that’s kind of a big deal. They don’t meet until after halfway through! That surprised me a bit. I don’t know if I would like Laura more if I were to read the full-length novel that this sets up, and to be honest I’m nost sure I want to.
Basically she is raising her stepson, and he’s almost at age of majority (he’s 17) and she has taken him to London for the first time. He has fallen in with the wrong crowd, and she’s stressed out and doesn’t know what to do. She pretty much wrings her hands and tries to tell him what he should do. He tells her he doesn’t need a babysitter and proceeds to party like a frat boy.

This is the issue I had with her. She has very few pages, and she comes off as super naïve and incredibly sheltered, but with zero personality. How can I want to read more, when she’s boring? The hero has so much personality as to overshadow any chance Laura would have had to shine. In the book coming up, her stepson’s guardian will probably take control somehow, and the hero will probably have to help her out somehow. It’s very obvious, and I really hope that Laura grows up a bit.

This whole storyline really needs more pages (hence the following novel), but still, I had a hard time getting worked up to read the novel since I didn’t like the heroine.

Guest Post & Giveaway w/ J.M. Gregoire

I would like to introduce all DemonLover's readers to
Lucas Tremayne

No, I am not delusional and yes, I am fully aware that this is actually a picture of Matthew Bomer; but hear me out.
When I started writing the Demon Legacy series, I wrote in this character of Lucas Tremayne.  Lucas is actually the brother of one of the main characters in the series and ended up being one of the stars of the prequel, Burning.  It wasn't my intention in the beginning but I am glad it worked out that way because the story of Lucas and Natalia was essential.

While writing Lucas as a character, I had this picture in my head of what he should look like but he was a victim of Blurry Face Syndrome.  I knew his mannerisms, I knew his personality and I had a general image in my head of what he looked like but no solid face.  Then one day, while curled up with my husband watching the movie ‘In Time’, I saw him.  In the movie, the character was Henry Hamilton, a man with way too much time on his hands.  Literally.  There is this on pivotal moment in the film where Henry is watching Justin Timberlake’s character sleep.  He’s contemplating this massively huge decision.  The camera really focuses on him just looking at the other man, a pained search in his eyes.  In that moment, I saw Lucas Tremayne.
This image is the exact moment that I am talking about but it’s within the same scene.  The intensity his gaze carried is what struck me.  It was the same intensity that I would picture Lucas having when gazing at Natalia.  His love for Natalia is so much bigger than anything Lucas has ever experienced and I could picture him just looking on her with intense wonder while she slept.  The gaze was caused by much different things but in my story versus the film but it felt the same either way.  Just intense.  Aside from the gaze, he fit everything else too.  The look was PERFECT!  I needed to know who this man was.  I Googled and discovered Matthew Bomer, the man with the most intense blue eyes in Hollywood.  I smiled to myself as I realized I had found my Lucas.

As I stated above, Lucas ended up becoming the star player in Burning, the prequel for the Demon Legacy series.  I realized while writing the first book in the series that the story of Lucas and Natalia really needed to be told.  The love that they share completely changed Lucas as a person and his actions in the series really couldn’t be understood without the reader experiencing what he went through.
Burning kicks off just prior to the beginning of the first book in the series.  Rather than cramming the story awkwardly into Book One, I decided that I would give their story its own place on the book shelf.  I am happy to announce that Burning is officially out!  Here’s the synopsis and a little taste of what it to come for them and their story:
Lucas was a typical playboy - lots of alcohol and a different girl every night.
One woman brought his emotional walls and the beliefs he used to build them
crumbling to the ground.
Now, an unexpected visitor is going to change both their worlds forever.

I hope you enjoy reading the story of Lucas and Natalia as much as I enjoyed writing it!
