Midnight Secrets by Ella Grace (aka Christy Reece)

From BN.com:
On a hot southern night, with a storm on the horizon, a family is shattered. Three beautiful daughters—Savannah, Samantha, and Sabrina Wilde—go on with their lives, each significantly changed, as they bear the memory of the murder-suicide that killed their parents. For years, they have stayed away from Midnight, Alabama. Until Midnight calls them home.

Savannah is the first one back, when a grueling case in Nashville leads the young prosecutor to seek shelter in the quiet of the once grand Wilde mansion. But when she finds letters casting doubt on her family’s dark, shameful past, she realizes that peace in Midnight is a shallow façade and sinister secrets lurk beneath the surface. Zach Tanner, once the town’s bad boy, is now the new police chief and still has a wild hold over her. Zach can feel it, too, but he hurt Savannah once. As teenagers, they broke every rule together. Now it’s his job to keep her safe, even though he isn’t sure who her enemies are—or which ones might be his own.

So here is my biggest beef with this novel.  The secret behind the murder-suicide of the parents is solved in the first book.  Come again?  That’s right.  All three sisters have gone into a form of law enforcement – lawyer, private investigator, police detective – because of the tragedy, and what I would think should be the unifying theme throughout the trilogy is finished in this book.   I’m still scratching my head over that one.

Ok, my second beef is the cover.  I requested this book thinking military, special ops, something of that sort.  I mean read that overview again, does it mention military?  So why is the cover a guy wearing dog tags?  Yes, Zach served and it had something to do with him breaking Savannah’s heart years ago, but he’s not associated with it anymore.  He’s not in some spec ops unit, or undercover.  He’s the local police chief.  False advertising.  I hate it when publishers do that!

My final beef is the plot.  Like I said earlier, the parents should have been a running theme, not the main plot thrust.  For goodness sake Savannah has a major baddie in Nashville threatening her and instead of that kind of danger following her, we get the “town has dark secrets” plot?  I don’t know, maybe the author felt that using the “bad guys follow girl and try to kill her plot” wasn’t exciting enough.  I don’t know.  I’m all sorts of confused with this one.  I don’t like it when I feel a good plot point is wasted.  Why bring it up if you’re not going to use it?

Moving past those, I liked the book.  The relationship between Zach and Savannah is nice, and you really want them to get past their 10 years of heartbreak.  The are certain characters in town that are fun to read, and the small town life is described in a very familiar way.  I also really like the relationship between the sisters and the fact that instead of being aloof with each other they rely on one another even if they are miles apart.  I am interested in finding out what their “stories” are because the other two seem much more interesting to me.  Maybe that’s why we got Savannah out of the way first.

I’d say this is a 3 out of 5 mostly because of the solid writing, sexual tension and relationships between people and not because of plot or scorching sex scenes.

Beauty and the Blacksmith by Tessa Dare

Beauty and the Blacksmith (Spindle Cove, #3.5)Beauty and the Blacksmith by Tessa Dare
My rating: 5 of 5 flames

I loved this one. It’s lighter than some of Ms. Dare’s previous works, but it worked so well. The main conflict in this story is that Aaron, the hero, is a blacksmith, while Diana, the heroine, is destined for marriage to a duke. Just ask her mama.

But what I liked about that conflict is that it was real. I don’t think it would have worked as a novel-length story, but for a novella, it was perfect.

For any Spindle Cove fans, you already know of Miss Diana Highwood and her marriage-minded mama. For those who are new to the series, Diana has come to Spindle Cove to recuperate from her breathing difficulties, but in the past 2 years hasn’t had any problems. During these past couple years, Diana has become infatuated with Aaron the blacksmith. Every single piece of jewelry or metal she can possibly break, she has broken just to have an excuse to have him fix it.

Aaron has started to notice.

More than that, Aaron has started to notice Diana noticing him:

“I wonder about it. Why you come so often. Why every metal latch and clasp and rivet you possess seems to need mending of late.” His voice grew deeper, almost dreamy. “I’ve told myself you’re just bored with this village. With this weather, there’s little else to do.”
He circled her, running his finger beneath that chain. Branding her with a necklace of his touch.
“Other times”—she caught a wry note in his voice—“I decide you’ve been sent by the devil to torment me for my sins.”
He came to stand before her, holding that vial that dangled from her necklace. He pulled gently, and she swayed toward him. Just an inch.
“And then sometimes I think maybe . . . just maybe . . . you’re hoping for something to happen. Something like this.”

I won’t tell you what “this” is ; )

I think that this is a sweet and fun novella that will fill that need when you just want a happy book, y'know? The romance is sweet, the forge isn't the only thing that's hot, and there's even a teeny mystery side-plot that nudges Diana to do something she might not otherwise have done. What a great series, and I can't wait for you guys to read this one.

Review of ICED by Karen Marie Moning

Books written by Karen Marie Moning never fail to deliver; but Karen Marie Moning books read by the voices of Phil Gigante and Natalie Ross are a thrill to the senses.
I wasn't sure what to expect when I started this next chapter in the Fever series, it's focus on Dani "Mega" O'Malley. I was scared that I might be one annoying scene after the next. Well... I found myself actually enjoying the world seen through Dani's eyes. Although I just couldn't get past the fact that Dani is only 14 years old, right? The entire book had this strange love "square", yes I said square. Enter Christian McKeltar, oh yeah, you remember that sexy Scot that was a hunky bartender at Ryodan's bar? He's back and sporting some dark Fae Prince sex appeal.... and Ryodan; bar owner, badass and all round "WTF are you anyways?", and to complete the mix is boy genius; Dancer. I loved Dancer's character in the book, but really wished to find out more about this tall, lanky and resourceful "bestie" of Dani's. I hope that in the future we see much more of this interesting bloke. There was a strange "vibe" going on between Ryoden and Dani all throughout the book; and creepy lecherous moments between Christian and Dani. I'm not sure which disturbed me more... But I knew to expect something after all the chatter in the blogs and reviews. I found nothing wrong with the way the tale unfolded, but rather enjoyed the journey. The book is jam packed with action, adventure and never ending trouble that Dani always seems to get herself into. The great chemistry between Dani and Ryodan makes this book, weather they were saving each others life or trying to kill each other; it kept me entertained throughout. In the end, Dani teams with all of her "square" fan club and risks life and limb to save her beloved Dublin. You get your HEA... well sort of. Her Warriors' Three Wishes - Carrie Ann Ryan

***Spoiler Alert & Caution must be 18 or older to read!***
“Humans aren’t as alone as they choose to believe”

Angels, Demons, Brownies and Dragons Oh, My!  Carrie Ann Ryan’s second book in the Dante’s Circle Series continues the journey of seven friends who were struck by lightning and lived to become something OTHER than human. They say that there is a True Half or Soul Mate for everyone but in some cases Triad’s are formed. Can anyone say Ménage!

This is no meek tale but one filled with revenge and intrigue, where a happily ever after isn’t all knight’s in shining armor, but sometimes WISHES come true without all the fluff and fancy. Carrie takes us literally through the depths of hell and back to put her heroine and in this case her TWO heroes together.  She takes us on a wild ride with hot steamy up against the wall sex scenes F/M/M, as well as M/M so be prepared.

Jamie Bennett – book keeper and book store owner, has been suffering for a year since meeting and being rescued by one very sexy Angel named Ambrose.  She knows that Ambrose is her True Half but he’s nowhere to be found.  After saving her life Ambrose high tails it back to the Angel realm and hasn’t been seen since.  She can’t make the change to whatever she’s meant to be without doing the nasty with Ambrose, but he just doesn’t seem to want to step up to the plate.

Ambrose is a 5000 + years old Angel – he had his world torn apart during the last Angel/Demon war when he lost his children and pregnant wife.  He doesn’t think he can go through that again.  He realizes Jamie is his True Half, but believes she’s way too young to be stuck with an old Angel like him. Ambrose knows he’s being a bit of a chicken where Jamie is concerned but he also has the feeling that there just might be another someone destined to be with her.  What’s an Angel to do??

Demons need souls to survive, Balin is a demon who refuses to take a soul and he’s dying.   The only chance he has to survive is to find his True Half, but his 300th birthday is fast approaching, if she’s not found before then it’s bye-bye Balin.  Since he’s literally stuck in Hell his chances of meeting Ms. Right are slim to none.  A little magic just might be needed to pull this off.

Demon games, imprisonment and torture, fiery pits of Hell with a bit of magic and of course we can’t forget the sex all wrapped up in this amazing sequel.  She has me WISHING for the next book to come out soon!

A Vampire’s Salvation (A Beyond Human Novella) by Virna DePaul

It has some pretty steamy scenes but they cannot make up for the heroine.  I spent the entire novella either rolling my eyes at her or wanting to smack her.
I’d say because it’s a novella I just didn’t have time to get into the story, but that not’s true.

From Author’s Website:

Jacob La Costa Rios is the head of the California governor’s security team; he’s also a vampire who wants the governor, a presidential hopeful, to support the peaceful integration of vampires into human society. Unfortunately, there are others who oppose Jake’s plan. Plus, Jake’s a little distracted by discovering his one true mate, the human female who can give him everything he’s always wanted: love, children, and continuing immortality. Francesca Marie Stewart is the governor’s “go-green” political consultant.
Although she’s been attracted to Jake from day one, her priority is her career and protecting her heart. But then Jake blatantly propositions her and Frankie, who hasn’t experienced sexual intimacy since she was seventeen-years-old, decides it’s time to take what she wants—within reason. No matter—once Jake makes love to Frankie, he knows reason will be the farthest thing from her mind. Then he just has to eliminate the person threatening her, reveal the fact he’s a vampire, and convince her that trusting him will bring both of them eternal happiness.

Jake Rios is the typical hot alpha male vampire.  Over six feet of sexy and a man who will do what he must to protect his mate.  He also seems to be a man who will tolerate his mate’s stupidity, but I guess when you’ve spent 200 years looking for “the one” so you can finally get someone pregnant then you’d put up with a lot as well.  And let’s just savor that for a moment shall we?  So your whole purpose in finding a mate is so you can knock the little woman up?!?!  Ok, and the fact that unmated vampires who reach 201 without mating start to decline in power.  So there’s something about them losing sanity or peace or whatever.  Oh, and did I mention that an unmated vampire male couldn’t even ejaculate inside anyone but his mate?  That’s handy.  However this begs the question: If males have to find their mates so they can ejaculate and impregnate her so they can stay sane, what recourse do female vampires have?  I don’t know because we’re never told they exist until after a mating.  Hmmm….

Francesca “Frankie” Stewart is just an idiot.  I get that getting kidnapped at the age of seventeen by the man you thought you loved would be traumatic and would create trust issues, but that’s no excuse.  Heaven save us from the overreacting female.  So she hasn’t had sex since she was seventeen (I can’t remember how old she is now, given her actions I’d say 18 but she’s probably mid twenties), has sworn off men, but just can’t help being drawn to Jake.  I get it, he’s gorgeous and got all that vampy charisma.  So she sleeps with him and during sex she discovers he’s a vampire when he bites her neck and starts to drink her blood.  So she readily accepts that, even asks him about what is/isn’t true – like the fact they cannot go out in sunlight.  So then when she wakes up in the morning to find him gone she doesn’t go “Oh hey my vamp lover can’t be in the sun so he’s probably gone somewhere to wait out the day” she goes “OMG, he’s gone and didn’t leave a note the *ssh*l* just wanted to get laid! I HATE HIM!”   Stupid.  That’s pretty much all I can about her.

It’s a shame, too, because the plot about the governor and bringing vamps mainstream sounds really intriguing.  I also feel there could’ve been more done with the threat to Frankie from someone that was involved with her kidnapping.  And the sex was pretty hot, not gonna lie.  Good bones, but needed a different female, Jake is ok but loving Frankie makes him a little weak in my eyes.  I think this would’ve gotten a much higher rating if it weren’t for Frankie’s freak out.  It just made no sense whatsoever and brought the entire novella down.  Sadly.

Can You Help Me Find this Book?

Hey guys, so I’ve been looking for a romance from back in the day for years but I can’t remember the title! Think you can help me figure it out?

It’s a category romance from probably 1994 or ’93. It's one of the Signet Historicals or Harlequin Historicals.

It’s about a Viscount (I think-and it may even have Viscount in the title) who has returned from the Napoleonic wars minus an arm. I think his name may have been Victor? He’s a drunk, and an ass, and his wife is (I think) named Cherry. She was a redhead.

The cover has a girl in a green dress on it and he's behind her.

Any ideas?

Which book are you excited about?

The Tower by Jean Johnson

The Tower by Jean Johnson

If you are the adventuring type and like a lot of action, with riddles to solve and gauntlets to run, and throw in some steamy sex scenes and a whole lot of magic, then this is the story for you.

Let me just say that Jean Johnson is one the first authors to get me addicted to reading. She is best known for her Sons of Destiny series.  Including - The Sword, TheWolf, The Master, The Song, The Cat, The Storm, The Flame, and The Mage.  (see links below)

I had the opportunity to talk with her and had to ask “Are you ever going to do any more books involving the Sons of Destiny characters?”  She informed me that "She's coming out with a new series in May. The Guardians of Destiny would indeed bring back some of the beloved characters and lands originating from the Sons of Destiny series."  I was so excited to hear this and was extremely fortunate to have been given the opportunity to read an advanced copy of The Tower the first in the Guardians of Destiny series.
Jean has a very unique style of writing that draws you into an amazing alternate universe where magic is used in everyday life like we use technology today.  Magic mirrors, gates that transport you to the other side of the world, move over Harry Potter, only this one’s for the adults.  I highly recommend that you read the Sons of Destiny series prior to reading her new series.  Having read both I found it beneficial to be familiar with the terminology/language, as well as understanding the layout of the land and characters.

Adventurers travel from all across the world to try their skills against the numerous traps, mazes, and riddles that challenged warriors and mages alike to survive the gauntlet of The Tower.  With a plethora of prizes for successfully surviving these traps as well as the opportunity to become famous, there was always entertainment to be had.  Not unlike our own Olympic Games or America’s Got Talent or even Fear Factor people around the world paid money to watch the successes and failures of each attempt to survive. Where there is money though, there is always bound to be greed.

Kerric Vo Mos is the Master of the Tower and as such rarely gets the opportunity for a little vacation.  On the one day he leaves to enjoy some much needed time off, the Tower falls under attack.  With the Master away the Tower goes into defense mode making what are usually simple games or challenges turn into lethal, death defying traps.  Kerric knows a short cut to get to the Fountain room where he can reclaim the Tower, but he needs a partner.  Kerric knows that he’s not the usual warrior type that runs the gauntlet. He’s short, not overly muscular and bookish.  He is however, a powerful mage and is familiar with every possible trap that lies before him; including one that will require him to be intimate with whatever partner he chooses.  He’s also running out of time.

Narahan Myal is one of the few female Painted Warriors from Mehdhi and has participated in several challenges in the Tower.  Although she doesn’t have magic, the tattoos that mark her as a Painted Warrior give her abilities similar to those of a mage.  Being from Mendhi where people are known to be quite tall, Myal is no exception, and her height makes her stand out in the village of Penambrion that surrounds the Tower. She has always been fascinated with the Master of the Tower but has mostly only ever seen him though the mirror scrying that is used to communicate with others – their version of a teleconference or Skyping.  So imagine her surprise when she finds him outside of her tenement (apartment), asking for her help.

Let Jean guide you on this amazing journey through trials requiring physical as well as mental strength to survive. Fall in love with the two mismatched heroes as they meet the challenges ahead and discover what they each have truly been seeking – love and companionship - while they strive to save The Tower.

I look forward to reading The Grove, the next in the Guardians of the Tower series, scheduled to release in December.
